Tech giant Intel announced on Wednesday (Jan 3) the launch of Articul8, a new generative artificial intelligence (AI) software company focused on enterprise customers.

Spun out from Intel’s own research and development efforts, Articul8 received backing from investment firm DigitalBridge and other investors in a bid to commercialize AI technology tailored for business settings, the company announced.

What does Articul8 AI do?

Intel worked with Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to create an AI system prototype that can read text and images. The system uses Intel hardware and open-source and proprietary AI models. It runs securely inside business data centers. After customizing the system for BCG over the past year, developers adapted it for other enterprise customers across industries like finance, aerospace, and telecom.

The new firm promises an AI product “built from the ground up” for enterprise, optimized for fast deployment, scalability, security, and cost-effectiveness. The system keeps customer data, model training, and inferences within existing security perimeters. Articul8 supports cloud, on-premises, or hybrid AI deployments.

The microprocessor maker and Articul8 will continue working closely together under a strategic partnership, with plans to utilize Articul8’s platform internally and also sell it jointly to customers. The spinout represents Intel’s latest move to seek outside investment and partnerships for tech initiatives as it pushes into software and services to boost the appeal of its hardware.

Former Intel VP and GM Arun Subramaniyan will lead Articul8 as its inaugural CEO. The launch aligns with CEO Pat Gelsinger’s plans to deliver advanced AI offerings that can compete with rivals like Nvidia, making Intel silicon more enticing across verticals.

“Articul8 is well positioned to deliver tangible business outcomes for Intel and our broader ecosystem of customers and partners. As Intel accelerates AI everywhere, we look forward to our continued collaboration with Articul8,” said Gelsinger.

Intel is one of many Silicon Valley companies making inroads in the AI space. They have already developed specialized AI hardware like its Neural Network Processor (NNP) chips and its Habana labs division focuses specifically on machine learning chips.

Microsoft is making the biggest change to Windows PC keyboards in nearly three decades by introducing a new Copilot key.

Announced on Thursday (Jan 4), this key provides instant access to Microsoft’s artificial intelligence (AI)-powered digital assistant, Copilot. It can perform tasks like adjusting settings, organizing screen elements, summarizing text passages, and generating images when prompted by the user.

Pressing this key opens the Copilot experience in Windows, allowing users to use the AI with ease. According to the software giant, the addition of the Copilot key represents the beginning of what they are calling “the year of the AI PC.” Essentially, this refers to AI becoming deeply and seamlessly integrated into the Windows experience, from the core system to the silicon to the hardware itself.

Microsoft continues to make strides in AI with Copilot

Writing on Thursday (Jan 4) on a company blog, Yusuf Mehdi, Consumer Chief Marketing Officer wrote: “Nearly 30 years ago, we introduced the Windows key to the PC keyboard that enabled people all over the world to interact with Windows. We see this as another transformative moment in our journey with Windows where Copilot will be the entry point into the world of AI on the PC.”

The Copilot key will start showing up on new Windows 11 devices from both Microsoft’s partners and its Surface lineup. Its addition comes shortly after the trillion-dollar company established itself as a leader in AI in 2023, thanks to developments like its GPT-powered Copilot chatbot assistant.

Integrating the Copilot key and assistant is only the initial step toward realizing the tech giant’s ambition of ushering in the era of the AI PC. As  Mehdi states: “In this new year, we will be ushering in a significant shift toward a more personal and intelligent computing future where AI will be seamlessly woven into Windows from the system to the silicon, to the hardware.”

Baidu, the Chinese search engine and tech giant, announced today (Jan. 3) that they are in talks with the state-backed Beijing Academy of Quantum Information Sciences (BAQIS) to donate a quantum computing lab and equipment, reports Reuters.

A spokesperson for the Beijing company who announced the plans said that the two organizations are currently in talks to finalize the details. There is not currently a timeframe for the completion of talks.

In November last year, Alibaba, another Chinese tech company, announced that amidst company restructuring they would be shuttering their quantum research lab and disbanding the research team who lead it. The company then donated the lab and equipment to Zhejiang University, another government-backed institution.

Baidu and quantum computing

The tech powerhouse has been involved in quantum computer research since 2018 when it opened its research lab. Led by Duan Runyao, the lab saw its first major success in 2022 with the release of Qian Shi, a quantum computer, which Baidu made available to external users to advance quantum computing research and apply the technology to practical uses.

Baidu stated at the time that Qian Shi boasts a 10-quantum-but (qubit) processor, and that they had also been successful in the development of a 36-qubit chip. Baidu has been developing Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and this vast computing power is sure to aid them in this pursuit.

What use is quantum computing?

Quantum computers operate at extremely low temperatures and are supposed to be many times faster than standard computers. However, there currently aren’t many practical applications. The mathematical proofs suggest that quantum computers could be especially valuable in fields that require heavy-duty modeling, such as physics and chemistry, but they have not yet been applied to these challenges.

There is also hope that quantum computers will be effective at developing AI tools. AI models need to be trained on huge quantities of data and require vast quantities of computing power. Quantum computing is one possible answer to the escalating power demands of AI development.

Chrome extensions help users of the world’s most popular browser personalize their experience and Google has released a list of its favorites of the year – with one area conspicuously missing.

From improving the aesthetic of your browser to boosting productivity, there’s a Chrome extension for everything. One of the most popular uses is ad-blocking software, which automatically blocks pop-up and pre-roll ads.

Many sites will now require you to turn off your ad blocker to access their pages as it impacts their ad-based revenue and such extensions are also not popular with Google. It’s perhaps no surprise, then, that ad-blocking extensions do not appear anywhere on Google’s list of top extensions for 2023.

Google hasn’t been quiet about its plan to prevent ad-blocking software from working at all, as part of its long-term plan to improve its services. After all, ad block impacts its revenue made through YouTube videos and on-site ads, so it was inevitable that ad-blocking extensions aren’t top of Google’s list of favorites for 2023.

Google’s top 12 Chrome extensions of 2023

Despite skipping over what’s surely one of the most used Chrome extensions, there are still some handy examples included in their list, such as:

  • Scribe, which uses AI to document workflows and create step-by-step guides to easily train colleagues
  • DeepL Translate, which translates web pages without navigating away from the page
  • QuillBot, which allows you to compose and respond to emails faster with its spell checker, summarizer tool, and AI writing assistant
  • Sider, an in-browser sidebar that lets you use generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude and Bard without having to open another tab
  • Teal, which bookmarks jobs from popular job boards and keeps job applications in one place
  • Transkriptor, a tool for automatically transcribing meetings from audio to text to review later
  • Bonjourr, to create a minimalist aesthetic on  your Chrome homepage
  • Speechify, a text-to-speech extension that reads articles, emails and PDFs using natural voices and accents for those who prefer to listen than read
  • Equalizer, offering more fine-tuned audio controls for online content
  • Boxel 3D, a platformer game that allows you to create your own levels
  • BTRoblox, to enhance the game’s platform with a variety of new features
  • Coupert, an extension designed to find the best promo codes from across the web and automatically apply them at checkout

Intel’s Core Ultra marks the “Age of the AI PC”, according to the global computing giant’s newsroom and social channels.

The announcement made across their socials coincided with the company’s “AI Everywhere” event today in New York.

Intel’s Core Ultra processors enter the marketplace

Intel Core Ultra processors, code-named ‘Meteor Lake’ are the driving force behind Intel’s newest brand of artificial intelligence (AI)-focused PCs.

Key specs like a “neural processing unit” for a range of AI workloads and new “Intel ARC Graphics” to enhance 3D graphics performance were on show at the event.

The chips are the first to be built on Intel 4 Process Technology. The chips are stacked and housed with varying types of silicone and a packaging technique named “Foveros”.

Intel boasts they are the most power-efficient processors the company has ever built. With two kinds of battery-saving cores, “P-Cores, tackling high-performance tasks, and E-Cores, tackling mundane jobs” according to today’s statement.

Intel Executive Vice President and General Manager of Client Computing Group, Michelle Johnston Holthaus told Intel’s website “The launch of Intel Core Ultra represents the unmatched scale and speed at which Intel is enabling AI on the PC. By 2028, AI PCs will comprise 80% of the PC market.”

Intel unveiled its 14th Generation Core series of desktop processors in October this year. Intel and Apple have been battling it out across 2023 with each attempting to offer the fastest laptop processors with the leaked Apple’s M3 Max processor last month.

AI has been a dominant subject matter across 2023 with the 27 EU member states agreeing to the Artificial Intelligence Act. This marked the first global region to agree on the ethical governance of AI and its deployment throughout the EU.

Surfaceink, the hardware company which helped launch Apple into the stratosphere, is being acquired by professional services and consulting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), reports TechCrunch. The financial terms of the deal are not being made public at this time.

The founder and CEO of Surfaceink, Eric Bauswell, declined to provide details in an interview, but it is understood existing customers will be coming with the deal. Surfaceink’s website lists many clients from the company’s lifetime, including Apple, Meta, Google, and Dell, amongst many other big names.

One of the UK’s biggest accountancy firms, PwC hopes the acquisition will help them expand the services they can offer to the numerous tech companies in their portfolio of clients. Surfaceink, as well as developing hardware, has labs specializing in other fields including audio systems engineering and electrical engineering. The services they could begin to provide to PwC’s customers are vast.

Speaking to TechCrunch, Bauswell said: “There’s there’s a long laundry list of reasons why different companies would want to work with us. And they all end up being very individualized.

“In general, it’s that we’ve got a team that’s got a ton of experience in shipping products. When people want to ship a new product or go after a new business sector or create a new business unit, you know, a lot of times we will be the first boots on the ground.”

Surfaceink and Apple’s history

Surfaceink was founded in 1999 specifically to partner with Apple and was critical to their success under CEO Steve Jobs, working on projects from the 1999 iMac Graphite through to the iPhone 1 in 2007 and the iPad 1 in 2010. In 2010, as the smaller Silicon Valley firm sought to expand and partner with more businesses, Apple soured on the relationship. The tech company recently announced it will be outsourcing production of a quarter of the world’s iPhones to India.

Speaking to TechCrunch, Jenny Koehler, PwC’s business development head said “It was on the heels of a strategic refresh within PwC. We’re always scanning the market for interesting companies, whether it’s partnership or acquisition, and Surfaceink was one of them. It happened to be at the same time that they were exploring [alternatives] for their purposes to be able to deliver more broadly with their clients.”

A study has found that 36% of IT workers are fearful that artificial intelligence (AI) will take their jobs over the next five years.

The new research compiled in a report by IT integrated solutions provider Ivanti also outlined that just 7% of respondents believe AI will benefit employees more than employers.

The company surveyed 8,400 office workers, IT and security professionals and C-level executives across the globe to understand attitudes,
expectations and challenges facing them and their employees.

Both of the findings above reflect a feeling of anxiety from workers toward what AI is capable of and the unknown outcome of its impact across several industries, including IT, five to ten years from now.

Dr Srinivas Mukkamala, chief product officer at Ivanti, was quoted in the report on striking the right tone between allaying such fears of workers and showing integrity and honesty on how AI will change corporate strategy.

“Companies can’t afford to shy away from this subject and preaching all the benefits of AI isn’t enough. Executives need to be clear in their communication about AI strategy and how it impacts the future of the employee experience, productivity and career progression,” he said.

“Without employee support and oversight of generative AI, companies will be slow to leverage the gains, and may have unintended consequences without the needed human oversight,” added Mukkamala.

AI here to stay

Studies like this are important to gauge employees’ feelings, to pinpoint fears and concerns and to gain an understanding of the worker’s perspective.

As Dr Mukkamala stated, companies can’t shy away from their responsibilities in what is a fluid, evolving situation. AI is here to stay and it will bring considerable change to the workplace, especially in IT.

The prevalence of AI across social media, industry and big tech is clearly visible. Just yesterday, the AI Alliance was launched which will see Meta and IBM headlining a collaboration of more than 50 companies and groups to create an industry body working together on open-source AI.

This is partly a response to OpenAI and their closed/proprietary model, showing that the race is on in more ways than one.

Mukkamala also commented that “most users and employees are skeptical of AI, so it is important that we establish trust globally with proactive security and AI system resilience.”

That is a crucial line indicating the impact that AI will have but also that human oversight will be essential along the way to manage the process and within that the mutual interest of employers and employees must be harnessed.

Helping AI to Consume Less Energy

We have all heard how AI is making our lives more efficient, but the real question is, what makes AI efficient? The very soul of Artificial intelligence is data, and globally, data centers consume 200 Terawatt-hours of power annually. This energy is enough to support 20 million households in the United States annually and can empower 333 million cars for a year.

A data center is nothing but a warehouse filled with computers computing large data rivers. Recently, the growing number of data centers across the globe has raised a consequentialist concern: emission. So, let’s discuss: What is the power problem Artificial Intelligence is facing? What are the solutions? Which company has come up with the solution?

The Power Problem

A wise man once said, “The best way to solve a problem is structuring it.” The quote finely resonates with the AI energy consumption problem we face today. Here, the problem is not energy generation for AI, but the overall energy consumption of AI-data centers. One can use this energy for various purposes, like making the environment sustainable and quality of life.

Circulating around how AI works, one thing grabs our attention: Data Centres. As the demand for artificial intelligence increases across industries, the demand for data centers grows, too. Data centers may be the most essential component of AI/ML; they help to compute, analyze, and store data for AI models. A very scalable data center can be as big as two average football fields, which is massive as it holds around 4200 of 24U racks.

This data center consists of 1000s of HPCs (High Performing Computers) that could help AI with various tasks that consume high energy power. Also, according to IEA, they are responsible for emitting 3% of total GreenHouse Gases globally. This is just one phase of the problem; the crucial one is providing energy consumption.

During the 100% energy utilization, a single data center facility consumes around 20 Megawatt. Below is the given rising power consumption chart that clears our speculations.

Global Electricity Demand of Data Centers 2010-2030

The lines here depict three possible scenarios: Best, Worst, and Expected. The worst scenario symbolizes data centers would not strategize their consumption of resources. It will lead to more emissions, global issues, and a power generation shortage. The expected scenario is that they reduce their consumption or strategize for efficiency. The third one, well, that is what we are going to discuss further: An efficient solution.

An Efficient Solution

When you break down the problem, you will get that there are two parts correlated to each other: The consumption part and the emission part. A company integrating technology and expertise for efficiency and scalability has introduced a microchip. This microchip is what will be the key to making AI energy efficient. The microchip makes AI the phoenix of the technological world.

A cognitive microchip that will help AI to consume less power. The ultimate aim of Artificial intelligence is to think like humans, and cognitive computers can do that. They are like intelligent children, but they can think faster, learn faster, and process information using various means. The microchip can learn predictions and patterns and make decisions like humans. The three technologies cognitive computers utilize are Natural Language processors, machine learning, and AI. I know, right? We circle back to where we started. AI is helping itself to become more energy efficient, achieving Green- Tech, and reaching the sustainability goal every industry craves.

What makes cognitive computers Energy Efficient

Who would have thought replicating human-like brain processing power could give us the following benefits? But here we are. These manycore microchips/cognitive computers can multitask at a very high-speed spectrum, allowing data centers to consume less energy. Another one is adaptive algorithms, where a data center can learn the most efficient way to perform a task. Lastly, these processors are designed to consume less energy and have an in-built energy-saving feature like smartphones.

The attributes that make the cognitive computers faster, better, and smarter are:

  • Parallel processing
  • Adaptive algorithms
  • Low-power processing
  • Energy saving features

Apart from this, cognitive computers also have numerous other benefits:

  • Accurate Data analysis
  • Improving customer interactions
  • Enhance productivity and service quality
  • Upgraded troubleshooting and anomaly detection

There are many benefits of cognitive computers yet to be explored; maybe exploring them will help us to reach the perfect solution. Sure, cognitive computers can eliminate numerous challenges data center faces, but some challenges could also hinder the implementation of these microchips.

What will it take to Implement the Algorithm?

Cognitive computers are powerful microprocessors that could lead data centers to a more efficient working phase. The chip can help data centers worldwide achieve the expected energy consumption trajectory. However, these high-speed data processing computers come with their own challenges. Here are a few of the challenges that could hinder the implementation

Complexity

The microchip we are discussing here can leverage artificial intelligence and machine learning. It hardwires their programs and algorithms to an IC. A tip of AI and IC can bring a lot of complexities. It becomes more complex when we are using it to drive data centers where multiple ICs are working together for an optimum result.

Although it’s an age of digital technology becoming intricate, it is essential to develop simplifying frameworks and platforms. So, every step we take towards making AI more efficient must also grow a branch of simplification. At last, if the technology cannot be used for the betterment of society, then it is not worth exploring.

Cost

The cognitive computers that would achieve the desired energy efficiency for data centers and AI systems are costly. Hopefully, government initiatives and cost-effective tech could contribute to it.

Skills Shortage

The primary issue, on the one hand, is that people are pretty optimistic about adapting AI; on the other, there are few doubts. Consequently, it creates a skill gap, and there are not many workers who can learn, adapt, and contribute to the development. Cognitive computing, AI, and big data tech are new-generation concepts that must be explored on a large scale. There needs to be programs, certifications, and educational institutes dedicated to it globally.

Conclusion

The new world powered by Artificial intelligence has pros and cons, and every solution does. It should be noted that we will preserve the benefits while the negatives can be eradicated. Sure, data centers used by AI have a massive energy consumption problem, but we are moving towards implementing more Green AI that consumes less energy.

A cognitive computer is an example, a milestone in this long journey of perseverance. In the end, achieving sustainability is the primary goal of every technological solution provider. A core ethos supporting society’s development should be adapted, integrated, and utilized for the most favorable outcome.
