The race to one million apps between Google’s Android operating system and Apple’s iOS is apparently over. At an event in San Francisco today, Google’s VP of Android product development Hugo Barra announced that the Google Play store had more than one million apps in its app store.

Apple said at its World Wide Developer Conference in June this year that it had hit 900,000 apps and reiterated that number on its quarterly earnings call yesterday. That includes 375,000 iPad optimized apps. Google’s product manager for Google Play said that the company will add a tablet-optimized section for apps in Google Play’s top lists.
In January of this year, ReadWrite predicted that Android would hit the one million app mark ahead of Apple’s iOS, based on growth projections.
