Arizona landscape, in the state where TSMC has confirmed delays to its site projects.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has confirmed a setback with its second plant in Arizona delayed by up to two years, while the company is still waiting on certainty over US government grants.

It is another blow for the $40 billion site after news broke in July that the first factory will not be up and running until 2025, as reported by Bloomberg.

TSMC, the world’s largest semiconductor chip foundry, is aiming to start second phase operations in 2027 or 2028, which is also a disappointment to the Biden administration in the White House in its aspirations to boost the manufacturing of key components on US soil.

The first site will only commence the production of 4-nanometer chips next year with labor and cost factors cited by the company in the announcement last year.

“Our overseas decisions are based on customer needs and the necessary level of government subsidy, or support,” stated chairman Mark Liu.

At TSMC’s earnings conference in Taipei on Thursday, its chief financial officer Wendell Huang added the decision on the second factory comes as a consequence of delays to the first plant.

Delays to US government funding

Taiwan’s flagship company is locked in talks with the US government on incentives and tax credits, whilst still facing challenges in hiring its workforce. Decisions on grants are set to influence the scale of advances at the second location which is also up against the clock.

TSMC has intimated a delay of two years could result in a one-generation evolution of semiconductor tech.

Incumbent US President Joe Biden passed the Chips and Science Act into law more than one year ago but the legislation aimed to inject billions of dollars toward the likes of TSMC and Intel for further US expansion has yet to yield any subsidies.

The situation is likely to be a source of frustration for the iconic chipmaker given that TSMC has already received funds from the Japanese government for a lesser project in Kumamoto, which was unveiled after the Arizona plan.

Production at the site in Japan is anticipated to get underway later this year.

Taj Mahal, India.

Indian IT giants HCL, Infosys, TCS and Wipro reported strong financial results in their latest quarterly earnings, fueled largely by rising demand for artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

Though hiring remained slow, revenue and margins grew substantially across India’s ‘big four’- HCL’s revenue rose 5.3% to $3.41 billion; Infosys increased margins by 0.1% to $4.66 billion; TCS grew revenues by 2.9% to $7.28 billion.

Despite a 6.9% decline to $2.66 billion for Wipro, its CEO Thierry Delaporte struck an upbeat tone, stating “It’s been a strong performance this quarter and it gives us good optimism for the quarters to come.”

“Viral” AI for business strategy

On the upward curve, AI is a dominant feature contributing to the outlook on the future.

“Almost every discussion with clients involves some element of Generative AI,” said Infosys CEO Salil Parekh, while his HCL counterpart C Vijakumar revealed his firm had 30 wins on their books in Gen-AI projects.

That sentiment was further endorsed by Wipro’s Delaporte who commented,  “AI is now moving from the curiosity and experimentation stage to becoming vital, I was going to say viral as well, to business strategy. In fact, we can confidently say that every long-term large deal now has an AI component.”

TCS also declared “AI.Cloud led the demand among Service Lines with strong momentum sustaining for Cloud migrations and increasing interest among customers for AI and Generative AI,” in a powerful indicator of the importance of AI for India’s leading businesses.

On staffing levels, HCL stood apart as the only one of the four firms to increase its numbers. Over the quarter, they recorded an added 3617 to their headcount, up 1.6% whilst the rest saw a decline, contributing to a total loss of 12,637 employees for the ‘big four’, collectively.

The automotive and aerospace industries were highlighted as key markets targeted for growth, with AI remaining a dominant trend leading to investment and returns.

Chinese manufacturers EVs

A new chapter in the electric vehicle (EV) sector has begun, as two Chinese car manufacturers recently unveiled sodium-ion–powered EVs, moving away from lithium, the metal that has transformed the industry. This technological breakthrough has led to concerns about Western companies losing their grip on sodium-ion battery innovation in China, which could result in a competitive disadvantage in the quickly growing EV market. The switch to sodium-ion batteries for electric vehicles could potentially reduce costs and reliance on scarce lithium resources, offering significant opportunities for the automotive industry. However, as Chinese companies lead the way in developing and implementing this cutting-edge technology, Western counterparts must invest in research and development to maintain their stance in the global EV market and not fall behind in this emerging space.

Benefits of sodium-ion batteries

Introducing sodium-ion batteries in these new vehicles signifies a significant departure from the widely used lithium-ion batteries in the EV industry. Sodium-ion batteries offer several benefits over lithium-based batteries, such as the abundance of sodium, making them more sustainable and affordable. Furthermore, these batteries typically perform better in extreme temperatures, making them an appealing choice for electric vehicles in diverse environments. Additionally, sodium-ion batteries have a longer life cycle, reducing the need for frequent replacements and reducing overall environmental impact. This cutting-edge technology also possesses faster charging capabilities, ultimately enhancing the user experience and convenience for electric vehicle owners.

Competitiveness in the EV market

The adoption of this technology by Chinese car manufacturers has initiated discussions about the competitiveness of the EV market, specifically about battery technology. As China seems to be leading the charge, concerns have emerged that Western companies are lagging in pursuing the potential advantages of sodium-ion batteries. These apprehensions are valid, considering that a shift to sodium-ion batteries could potentially lower production costs and improve the overall efficiency of electric vehicles. Therefore, Western companies must invest in research and development to keep up with the competition, or they risk falling behind in a rapidly growing industry that has the potential to reshape the automotive market.

Adapting to technological improvements

As the global demand for electric vehicles is expected to soar in the coming decades, Western manufacturers must act promptly to embrace and adjust to these technological improvements to maintain their place in the continuously growing EV market. Failure to adapt to the changing landscape could result in significant losses as more environmentally-conscious consumers shift their purchases towards eco-friendly vehicles. Companies that embrace innovation and participate in the global shift towards electric vehicles will ultimately benefit from brand loyalty, reduced environmental impact, and increased competitive advantage in the expanding market.

Sustainable practices will necessitate investment in research and development, strategic collaborations, and a dedication to sustainable practices in the quest for cleaner, more eco-friendly transportation options. Increasingly, companies and governments are recognizing the importance of these efforts, as demonstrated by the rise of electric vehicle adoption, the push for improved public transit, and the development of innovative transportation technologies.

The recent unveiling of sodium-ion–powered electric vehicles by Chinese car manufacturers has underscored the need for Western companies to keep pace with advancements in battery innovation. This breakthrough in sodium-ion battery technology presents a compelling alternative to traditional lithium-ion batteries, offering benefits such as cost-efficiency and a wider availability of resources.

SpaceX Starlink Mission Triumphs

British telecommunications giant BT is in talks with Elon Musk’s Starlink to bring broadband and mobile services to remote areas in the United Kingdom, according to a Telegraph report.

Successfully tested last week, SpaceX’s satellite-based network sent its first text messages between two mobile phones in a breakthrough moment for the space transport services company.

It was delivered using the T-Mobile network in the United States but up to now, no UK carrier has been in place to enable a rollout of services on the other side of the Atlantic. That could now change with news of work being carried out in England as BT is said to be testing Starlink equipment at its Adastral Park research centre, near Ipswich.

The British firm wants to be able to deliver connections to hard-to-reach locations, which is something that Startlink wants to replicate across the globe. At this stage, BT is exploring what the satellite system can do for broadband services whilst also considering the capability to improve mobile connectivity.

Business priority for the partnership

The BT Group operates EE, the second-largest mobile network operator in the UK but approval would be required from the regulator Ofcom if a direct-to-mobile deal was to be agreed with Starlink.

Whilst there is obvious potential for both consumer and business markets, initial talks between both parties are said to be concentrating on the latter.

BT wants to be able to deliver effective broadband and mobile services to sites such as oil rigs, mines, and secluded remote workplaces. It is expected that a consumer offering would follow, given the crossover in providing services that were previously out of reach.

The British government has worked with mobile operators in a £1 billion scheme to target rural “not spots” but Vodafone, Three, and Virgin Media O2 have tempered expectations with a warning that the first phase of the project will be delayed by around two years.

Malaysia is making a big push into semiconductor manufacturing with aims of meeting skyrocketing demand from the electric vehicle (EV) industry.

The country’s International Trade and Industry Minister, Zafrul Aziz, unveiled a strategy yesterday focused on boosting Malaysia’s production of chips critical for powering EVs and autonomous vehicles. Aziz stated the global pivot towards EVs represents a “tremendous opportunity” for Malaysia to excel as a major chip supplier.

Aziz has set out a plan to prosper from its burgeoning supply of semiconductors thanks to the insatiable demand for the product at present.

As reported by CNBC, he underlined how semiconductors are relied upon in modern auto manufacturing, but especially for EVs which can require up to 15,000 chips whilst a standard car would need around 5000.

Aziz detailed how they already supply the components “in the billions” and further outlined the scope for significant growth, with an ambition to lure the likes of Tesla to Malaysia for major expansion.

Such companies “want to realign to ensure the security of (their) supply chain, the resiliency of the supply chain is there, so they are coming closer to Malaysia and we are inviting many EV makers to come,” he stated.

Tesla currently enjoys a solid relationship with Malaysia, acting as one of its key charging station providers whilst it also counts on the Southeast Asian country for its supply chain.

Mayalysia’s EV market

Minister Aziz had previously spoken on his belief that EVs would act as a catalyst for manufacturing exports in Malaysia and as an active player in the market, they need to exploit the opportunity.

To deliver that objective, the government has set up a national semiconductor task force.

As part of their vision, they intend to dedicate resources to the front end of the chips industry, which involves wafer fabrication and engraving circuits, and not just the back end with its concentration on the assembly of integrated circuits and packaging.

The semiconductor business is said to account for 7% of  Malaysia’s GDP and half of its exports, on the back of a solid manufacturing background.

“The good thing about Malaysia is this industry started in the early 70s so it’s been here 50 years, and the foundation is strong for us today to move up the value chain,” added Zafrul Aziz.

A U.S. lunar lander launched for the Moon on Monday, the first in over 50 years, has suffered an anomaly.

Peregrine Mission-1 aimed to be the first US craft to moon-land since 1972’s Apollo 17. The launch appeared fine at first but company Astrobotic later said an anomaly occurred post take-off.

The launch marks private firms joining the space race to make lunar deliveries for NASA and other clients. It signals a shift towards commercial space travel as NASA relies on companies offering services in place of government-run missions alone. This spacecraft built by a private contractor ushers in new ambitions for corporate involvement in exploration to the moon and beyond after a half-century dry spell since Apollo landings ceased.

NASA’s CLPS (Commercial Lunar Payload Services) initiative and Artemis program, United Launch Alliance (ULA) and Astrobotic set off from Cape Canaveral. The delivery service is packed full of assorted items including a chunk of Mount Everest, tiny robot cars developed by Mexican university students, and even the remains of legendary fathers of science fiction Gene Roddenberry and Arthur C. Clarke.

Rod Roddenberry the son of Gene, is working with space-memorial company Celestis, to send his father’s and some other notable genetic information into space. This includes Star Trek cast members cremated remains, memory files and DNA capsules of icons Nichelle “Uhura” Nichols, James “Scotty” Doohan, and DeForest “Bones” Kelley.

As reported by space.com, the DNA of George Washington, Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy will also go up amongst the stars in the Celestis payload.

CEO of Astrobotic, John Thornton praised the launch. “Today Peregrine Mission One achieved a number of big milestones. Peregrine powered on, acquired a signal with Earth, and is now moving through space on its way to the Moon. These successes bring us one step closer to seven nations landing on the Moon, six of which have never been to the Moon before.”

Space, the final frontier

The payload carried by the new Vulcan rocket originates from seven different nations and 16 commercial customers for Astrobotic. With some of the first lunar space payloads from Mexican and German space agencies and the UK’s Peregrine Ion Trap Mass Spectrometer, we reported last week.

The tiny Mexican space robots named COLMENA will be flung from the lander and Mexico’s National Autonomous University (UNAM) hopes they will scrub the surface and atmosphere of the Moon for sample data.

Gustavo Medina-Tanco, Head of Laboratory of Space Instrumentation at UNAM thanked Astrobiotic in a post on Linked in, saying “Dear Astrobotic operations team, thanks for taking care of COLMENA to the Moon.”

Vulcan sets new standards in exploration

United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan is a 61-metre rocket that will replace the Atlas V. It was assembled at Astrobotic’s headquarters in Pittsburgh, PA. The rocket contains parts made by hundreds of suppliers from across the US, including 184 Pennsylvania-based companies.

The development project with Boeing-Lockheed Martin includes engines from Jeff Bezos’s space company Blue Origin.

“Astrobotic would like to thank its suppliers, customers, sponsors, supporters, and 250-employee team, who have worked tirelessly for years to make this moment possible,” said Thornton.

Earlier this month, space exploration rival Space X launched the Starlink program. This satellite hopes to give network service anywhere on Earth.

The Dutch government has partially revoked an export license for semiconductor equipment giant ASML (Advanced Semiconductor Materials Lithography) to ship some of its most advanced lithography machines to China, report Reuters.

The canceled export license affects ASML’s NXT:2050i and NXT:2100i systems. It comes after the European tech giant received “further clarification of the scope and impact” of expanded US export rules aimed at limiting China’s domestic chipmaking capabilities.

ASML stock price dips

ASML’s stock dipped 1.54% to 671.20 euros on the news, kicking off 2024 on a sour note on the first trading day of the new year.

While the license cancelation won’t have a “material impact” on ASML’s 2023 earnings, the company did not disclose the specific financial implications. It also remains unclear exactly how many lithography machines will be affected.

ASML’s most advanced extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography systems have required a Dutch export license since September 2023 due to US government pressure. These advanced machines are crucial for producing leading-edge chips below 10 nanometers.

China claims discrimination

China was quick to criticize the Netherlands’ decision, with Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin stating Beijing hopes the Dutch government will “protect the common interests of both countries and their companies and maintain the stability of international supply chains”.

The official X account for The Chinese Communist Party’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged the Netherlands to “uphold fairness & market principles.”

Asia’s biggest economy was ASML’s third-largest market after Taiwan and South Korea in 2022. However, during Q3 2023, China accounted for a whopping 46% of ASML’s total revenue – making it the company’s largest market. Broader tensions have been rising due to US-spearheaded efforts to constrain China’s semiconductor industry through export controls and Beijing has been investing billions to foster its domestic chip capabilities but still lags years behind cutting-edge manufacturing.

Countries have been reluctant to export their most advanced semiconductor technology to China due to rising national security concerns, fears of enabling its military capabilities, and a brewing technology cold war with the US.  With chips becoming critical infrastructure for military systems and emerging technologies like AI, Western nations are increasingly wary of strengthening Beijing’s capabilities and economic competitiveness in strategic fields.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has announced a significant power shift at the firm with its current chairman Mark Liu set to step down next year.

A statement from TSMC indicated its board had recommended current CEO and Vice Chairman C.C. Wei to step into Liu’s position.

As reported by Reuters, the world’s largest contract chipmaker is set to enact the boardroom change, subject to the upcoming company election in June.

Liu is set for a new beginning, with a company statement quoting him as saying that he wishes to put his “decades of semiconductor experience to other use, spend more time with my family, and start the next chapter of my life”.

He continued, “I am confident that TSMC will continue to perform outstandingly in the years to come.”

His would-be successor is no stranger to the company, with Wei having joined TSMC in 1998 and has been present on the board since 2017.

‘World-class’ qualities at Taiwan’s standard bearer

TSMC is a major supplier to Apple and Nvidia and they benefit at present from the surge in AI start-ups and applications. Their stock price has soared 30% this year, giving a company value of $483.3 billion.

On the back of this news, the chairman of a Taiwan-based investment portfolio firm reflected on the strength of Asia’s most valuable listed company.

James Hwang of  Franklin Templeton Securities Investment Management’s Taiwan office stated that it is likely to be a seamless transition for the “world-class company”.

“Its internal processes in terms of developing professional high-end leadership talent are comprehensive and polished. I don’t think the change (in leadership) will noticeably impact the operation or direction for TSMC going forward,” he said.

The company is considered in Taiwan as the “sacred mountain protecting the country” due to its superb economic performance and importance to the globe’s chip industry.

Most of TSMC’s ongoing production will remain in Taiwan but the firm is diversifying to Germany in Europe as well as Arizona in the US, and Japan to meet the insatiable demand for its products across the planet. These new plants would also provide balance to the risk of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan.

Japanese chip equipment manufacture

Kokusai Electric Corp, a Japanese chip machinery maker, is hiring in China in a move to extend the 66% rally in stock prices it saw after its IPO in October, reports Bloomberg.

The anticipated growth in China comes down, in part, to the USA enforcing tighter export regulations on domestic chip manufacturers exporting to China. Kokusai Electric Corporation manufactures and distributes semiconductor manufacturing systems.

“Countless small-scale fabrication plants are springing up like mushrooms in China,” said Kokusai’s CEO Fumiyuki Kanai, in an interview with Bloomberg. “The Chinese government is providing aggressive support to the industry for activities including the internet-of-things, smartphones, and personal computers, ” he continued.

Kanai, who handled the Tokyo-based company’s IPO, believes that China holds continued value for Kokusai and that increasing the company’s support staff there will better serve clients. He also said that after investments for production and next-generation tool development, he will focus on shareholder returns, and will actively consider stock buybacks.

The Chinese chip market

“We have locations in China only to provide after-sale services and have no plans to do production or research there,” Kanai said. “We will increase personnel to cover the local demand.”

The Chinese market accounts for 40% of the chip gear maker’s revenue, with the expectation that this will rise to 50% in the near future.

As a result of strict export regulations from the USA, Chinese chip equipment producers were witnessing a surge in sales. However, more recent news suggests that the market may not be as stable as it appeared, with over 22,000 chip-related firms shutting their doors in 2023. This is in part due to a decline in demand caused by market changes due to Covid.

The most at-risk companies are the smallest ones which struggle to secure investments, and with their established position in the market, Kokusai is likely hoping to absorb some of the demand released by closing competitors. Kanai also stated that the company is looking to diversify into areas that complement its current range.

Shanghai, China. Chinese customers will not get Nvidia's new AI chip as scheduled.

In a significant downturn for China’s semiconductor sector, over 22,000 chip-related firms have ceased operations since 2019, with 2023 marking a record year for company closures. This trend, highlighted in a report by DigiTimes citing Chinese tech media TMTPost, indicates a challenging period for the industry, exacerbated by U.S. sanctions and a global decrease in chip demand.

The year 2023 has been particularly harsh, witnessing the closure of approximately 10,900 chip-related companies, averaging about 30 companies shutting down daily. This spike surpasses the 5,746 companies that folded in 2022 and is part of a five-year trend affecting chip design, semiconductor manufacturing, and wafer fab equipment sectors.

In 2023, over half of the 3,243 chip design companies in China reportedly generated annual revenues below 10 million CNY (approximately $1.4 million). Wei Shaojun, a leading figure at the China Semiconductor Industry Association and a professor at Tsinghua University, expressed concerns over the development trajectory of the Chinese industry.

These companies are struggling with more than just declining sales. They are dealing with financial losses from unsold inventory, resulting from an oversaturated market and wider economic downturns impacting the semiconductor industry. A significant miscalculation occurred in 2021 and 2022 when companies produced large quantities of chips anticipating continued high demand from the Covid-induced work-from-home trend. However, as the pandemic subsided, demand plummeted, leaving companies with excess inventory that’s rapidly depreciating.

Investment woes and survival strategies for China’s chip industry

The situation is particularly dire for smaller companies, which struggle to attract investments. U.S. restrictions on investments in the Chinese semiconductor industry, coupled with European investors’ reluctance due to U.S. sanctions, have compounded the problem. While larger firms like YMTC and Huawei have invested heavily in finding alternative suppliers and building secret fab networks, smaller companies lack the resources to adapt similarly. Although the Chinese government is investing in the sector — with a recent $1 billion infusion into HLMC — it cannot support every chip startup.

2023’s record number of company closures reflects the severe challenges faced by China’s chip industry: low demand, overstock, and funding difficulties. This has led to a significant shift in the semiconductor landscape, with the industry now dominated by larger companies, as smaller players are increasingly forced out of the market.

The University of Albany, New York, is set to become the site for a $10 billion semiconductor chip research facility, as New York State partners with tech giants IBM, Micron, Applied Materials, and Tokyo Electron, reports the Wall Street Journal.

This is part of The Empire State’s move to be designated a research hub under the government’s $53 billion “Chips Act” from last year. The goal is to begin next-generation research and manufacturing in a move that will create 700 jobs in Albany, the state’s capital, according to New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s office. Hochul’s office also predicted that continuing to expand the project would bring in $9 billion of private money.

Construction of the facility will be coordinated by NY Creates, the non-profit overseer of the Albany NanoTech Complex. State funds will also be used to acquire some of the most advanced chip-making machinery in the world from Dutch company ASML Holding. ASML Holding is a world leader in this equipment and the machines can cost hundreds of millions of dollars. Last year’s Chips Act alleviated the cost with a 25% investment tax credit on the cost of chip manufacturing equipment.

New York is investing $1 billion for the purchase of the equipment alongside construction of a 50,000-square-foot building in which to house the equipment, with space for research, development, and manufacture. It is estimated that construction will take around two years.

US Chips Act 2022 driving force behind New York plans

Biden’s Chips Act of 2022 aims to increase domestic chip manufacture by providing huge investment into the sector. In 1990, the USA captured 37% of modern semiconductor manufacturing capacity, but this has declined to just 12% today according to Semiconductors.org. In total, the Chips Act authorized $280 billion to fund research and manufacture of semiconductor chips.

The USA is not alone in prioritizing efforts to expand its chip-making capabilities, as the EU launched a €43 billion plan to increase its capacity and reduce reliance on China earlier this year. Semiconductors are vital for technology and defense applications and many nations are wary of China’s influence and control in the industry.

The U.S. Commerce Department announced a $35 million award to BAE Systems to enhance domestic semiconductor production, according to a recent Reuters report. This funding, part of the $52.7 billion “Chips for America” program, aims to quadruple chip production in New Hampshire, crucial for F-35 fighter jets and commercial satellites.

The investment in BAE Systems Electronic Systems, a unit of BAE Systems, is focused on modernizing the Nashua, New Hampshire Microelectronics Center. This initiative marks the first allocation from the substantial “Chips for America” program, established by Congress in August 2022 to reduce reliance on Asian semiconductor production.

President Joe Biden emphasized the strategic importance of this move, stating that “over the coming year, the Department of Commerce will award billions more to make more semiconductors in America.” This step is not only about boosting production but also about enhancing research and development in the semiconductor sector.

The Pentagon’s commitment to the F-35 program, with plans to spend $1.7 trillion including the purchase of 2,500 planes in the coming decades, underscores the critical need for these chips. White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan highlighted the importance of these semiconductors for F-15s and F-35s, stressing the need for the U.S. to avoid reliance on other countries in times of crisis.

The Commerce Department’s recent actions to prevent chip subsidies from benefiting China and to halt shipments of advanced artificial intelligence chips to China further illustrate the national security implications of semiconductor production.

Industry-wide implications and future prospects

Major companies like Intel, Micron, and GlobalFoundries are among those seeking significant funding from the chip program. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo anticipates that this initial award to BAE Systems is just the beginning, with more announcements expected to accelerate in the first half of the next year.

The New Hampshire project is expected to halve the future cost of chips, more than compensating for the $35 million investment. These chips are integral for electronic warfare systems in battle environments, particularly for F-35s manufactured by Lockheed Martin.

BAE Systems CEO Tom Arseneault expressed that the funding would enhance their microelectronics capabilities, crucial for defense and aerospace customers. This first chip award underlines the program’s focus on national security and the goal of establishing a robust, long-lasting domestic semiconductor manufacturing industry.

The future of self-driving truck company TuSimple in the US looks limited, as it announced it will be reducing its workforce to about 30 people while it searches for a potential buyer.

The decline of TuSimple in the US saw the San Diego-based company go from market leader in autonomous long-haul trucking to searching for a new buyer – after safety concerns and government trepidation over dealing with a Chinese startup. These safety concerns around self-driving vehicles have been echoed this week as well, via a Tesla whistleblower.

TuSimple is now moving its business to China. According to a company statement on Monday, it has reduced its US staff by 75% – cutting its global workforce to half of what it was in 2022. It also informed investors that it expects to generate no significant revenue. TuSimple is currently valued at $229 million, despite entering the US exchange with a $8.5 billion valuation.

TuSimple and US concerns over China ties

TuSimple and the US government got off to a rocky start before the company even went public, as a regulatory probe was launched into the company due to a Chinese investor who held two board seats and a large stake in the company.

As the US views autonomous driving technology as a key asset to national security and military operations, an agreement was struck between the Committee on Foreign Investment in the US (Cfius) and TuSimple to avoid sharing any critical data and technology with its China base.

The Wall Street Journal also reported, that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Cfius launched an investigation into TuSimple over illicit financing and transferred technology to a Chinese trucking startup.

The startup in question was Hydron – founded by TuSimple co-founder Mo Chen – who was seeking to build hydrogen-powered semi-trucks powered by TuSimple self-driving technology.

the forbidden palace in China

China’s sudden investigation into Apple’s major supplier, Foxconn, has raised eyebrows in the tech and global trade sectors. While the move might be seen as a power play, it could potentially backfire on China’s economic interests.

Foxconn and China’s relationship

Foxconn, officially known as Hon Hai Precision Industry, has been a significant player in China’s electronics manufacturing landscape. Their longstanding harmonious relationship with China is underscored by the fact that they are one of the nation’s largest employers. However, according to The Wall Street Journal, recent tax and land-use probes into Foxconn’s subsidiaries have cast a shadow over this relationship. The reason behind these investigations remains speculative, but analysts suggest it might be China’s way of expressing discontent with Foxconn’s diversification efforts, especially its shift towards India and other manufacturing hubs.

Potential political undertones

Another angle points to the political aspirations of Foxconn’s founder, Terry Gou. As he steps into Taiwan’s presidential race, China might be using this probe as a subtle warning. The current Taiwan presidency, held by the China-skeptic Democratic Progressive Party, could be threatened if votes get divided among pro-China independent candidates like Gou.

Implications for the tech industry

This investigation could inadvertently push manufacturers and their clients, including giants like Apple, to look beyond China for their operations. The unpredictability of China’s policies might deter businesses that once saw the nation as a stable economic partner. The symbiotic relationship between Apple and China, often referred to as “Chimerica,” might be at risk if such key players feel threatened.

Shift in electronics manufacturing

China remains a dominant force in electronics manufacturing, but there’s a noticeable shift. The percentage of U.S. smartphones imported from China has decreased from 85% in 2021 to around 75% recently. Factors like the Trump-era tariffs, China’s strict Covid-19 lockdowns, and geopolitical tensions have prompted companies to diversify their operations. Foxconn’s investments in China have dwindled since 2018, with a notable increase in iPhone production in India.

The cost of diversification

Moving operations out of China isn’t without its challenges. Establishing new facilities in countries like Vietnam and India requires significant capital. Foxconn’s capital expenditures saw a substantial increase in 2021 and 2022. Despite the economic reasons to stay in China, political and security concerns might accelerate the shift away from the country.

In conclusion, while China’s intentions behind the Foxconn probe remain unclear, the repercussions on the global tech industry and China’s own economic interests are evident. Only time will tell if this move will be beneficial or detrimental to China’s standing in the global market.

BIM in the AEC Industry

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is an approach for digital information management adopted by industries to improve building and infrastructure quality. It pays heed to the enhanced exchange and management of information. The generated data can be referred to as a trusted source for decision-making processes for the project. The digital representation of a building through BIM increases the productivity of engineers and designers.

But, to clarify the ambiguity and create awareness about the process of BIM, a globally accepted framework was required. It would formalize the procedure and rectify the conflict of choice between various accepted standards. For the BIM industry, no such fixed documentation existed until 2018.

Various stakeholders needed help choosing a definite set of methodologies, technologies, and standards aligned with the project, as many enlisted BIM guidelines worldwide exist. In 2018, ISO published ISO-19650 to encourage and support the use of BIM on a grand scale. It would articulate a mental model speculating the solution to the problems arising in the construction industry.

What is ISO-19650?

ISO-19650 is a standard document outlining information management specifications and principles. The provided framework applies to the entire life-cycle of the building, including initial designing, strategic planning, engineering, development, documentation, construction, day-to-day activities, maintenance, refurbishment, and repair. The standards adhere to projects of every scale and complexity, including infrastructure networks, large estates, individual built-forms, and the projects entitled to deliver them.

ISO 19650 is used by

  • those involved in the procurement, design, construction, and commissioning of built assets; and
  • those involved in delivering asset management activities, including operations and maintenance

It is based on the UK 1192 series that defines BIM level 2 in the UK. BIM level 2 is a series of national guidelines and publicly available specifications developed by the UK government in 2011. After this publication, many international asset owners realized the utility and efficiency of BIM and requested ISO to elevate the UK 1192 series to a globally acceptable level. The procedure to develop the documents was commenced by an international working group convened by Anne Kemp. The origin of ISO 19650 can be traced back to two British standards – BS 1192 and PAS 1192-1.

The international series ISO 19650 lays a leveled ground for related stakeholders to innovate, compete, and collaborate irrespective of location. When using BIM, it puts forward the concepts and principles required for various business processes. In addition, it supports the production and management of data throughout the life cycle of the built assets.

Bifurcations of ISO-19650

The ISO 19650 series is divided into two sections – BS EN ISO 19650 – 1 and BS EN ISO 19650 – 2, catering to different project stages.

The first section – BS EN ISO 19650 – 1, addresses how to deal with concepts and principles. It further recommends a framework for information management, which includes exchanging, recording, versioning, and organizing it for all parties. Furthermore, it involves the joint production of architectural, engineering, and construction information. Finally, it consists of a National Foreword explaining the new terminology.

The second section, BS EN ISO 19650 – 2, narrates the management process for information exchange using BIM during the project’s delivery phase. It is referred to by all organizations and used for projects of all types and scales. It includes a National Annex that aligns the standards of ISO with the UK BIM level 2.

How does ISO-19650 contribute towards the growth of BIM in the AEC industry?

The 19650 guidelines provide a data standardization framework for delivering information with reduced coordination time and cost. An everyday data-sharing environment is created for sharing information. Different organizations come together to bring a specific project to life. ISO 19650 has helped these teams combine and extract data through BIM with a unified approach.

Various companies have struggled to address the requirements and needs of their partners, clientele, or suppliers. ISO 19650 series rectifies this situation with bifurcated guidelines that articulate a proper working format for every client type. This further enhances the efficiency and mobility of their internal resources. The client and teams use BIM per these guidelines to identify owner’s exchange information requirements and maneuver towards efficient and effective project delivery.

This set of guidelines ensures a clear understanding of every task performed with a clarity of authority, capacity, responsibility, and competency for all involved members. A typical data environment in BIM ensures the security and duality of information. This environment is created for collecting, managing, and circulating information containers through a systemized procedure.

The operational and delivery phases of the project witness a smooth process involving collaboration, production, management, sharing, and exchange of all information due to the implementation of the ISO 19650 series.

The ISO 19650 series will drive client interest in the BIM working and implementation process, uplifting the entire sector. The provision of 19650 will bring all sorts of standards to a single information source that directs a smooth workflow. To improve the further additions of the ISO 19650 series, the stakeholders using these guidelines are advised to collect detailed information and experiences regarding its use and implementation.

Different aspects catered through ISO 19650 for the rise of BIM

1 Adaptation at a global level

The standards increase awareness about the digital BIM processes, leading to a rise in global adaptability. Furthermore, a specific set of guidelines will develop an understanding of BIM amongst the customers, enhancing their willingness to adopt and utilize it. In addition, the collaboration of projects can go global as local restrictions are eliminated, which could have restricted the planning and designing process.

2 Appropriate delivery of information

The exchange of information becomes more accessible with specific requirements that direct systemized information management. The manufacturer bears the pressure of supplying correct data and news at the right amount of time.

3 Ease of Optimization

The standards pave the way for many opportunities to optimize the supply chain. The overall process is catalyzed by the amalgamation of the client side (planning & construction) and industry (sales, manufacturing & shipping).

Documents that help in understanding the full potential of BIM and facilitate the digital delivery process into the project plan

  • Guide for appointing party’s exchange information requirements (EIR)
  • Pre-appointment – BIM execution plan
  • Assess the task team’s capability & capacity
  • Delivery team mobilization plan
  • Delivery team risk register
  • Post appointment – BIM execution plan
  • Delivery team’s detailed responsibility matrix
  • Guide for appointed party’s exchange information requirements
  • Task information delivery plan
  • Master information delivery plan
  • Mobilization plan
  • Information management process – collaborative production of information and information model delivery
  • Project closeout

The publication of ISO 19650 moves towards converting the least digitized sector image of the construction industry and taking it towards innovation. The objective was to create a common approach toward Building Information Modeling (BIM) for every project worldwide.

It certainly provides a standardized method for the amendment of the data fabric to various projects. Following ISO 19650 in the BIM clarifies the scope of work that facilitates project planning, building, and operational stages. Also, the manufacturers are not directly impacted, and it creates a transparent digital process with the involvement of all relevant parties.

Reshaping Business and Society

Over the past several years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has reached new heights. We now find ourselves on the cusp of the “Massive IoT” era, where the technology is reaching a nearly unimaginable scale due to the number of sensors and devices entering the market. Along with that comes new possibilities to operate businesses and address global challenges that were not feasible even five years ago.

Valuable use cases are already forming across industries, creating new ways to monitor resources, optimize processes, and save costs. Sensor devices deliver data about an asset’s location, condition, and other time-sensitive operational statuses that help prevent costly losses or potential liabilities. However, in order for the IoT to function correctly as it continues to grow, its ability to scale hinges on the expansion of Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWANs) designed to support large-scale deployments of sensors that work seamlessly for decades at a time. Additionally, these networks need to be able to support different public and private deployment models, simplify the management of networking tasks, and scale on demand as needs and priorities change.

LoRaWAN has surged ahead of competing LPWAN solutions in meeting those needs due to its unique combination of cost efficiency, low power consumption, long-range, and non-proprietary model. Because of its functionality, according to the LoRa Alliance, it now leads global, at-scale LPWAN deployments across all metrics, ranging from the most solutions available, devices deployed, messages sent, and network availability, with coverage offered in more than 76,000 cities in 188 countries.

The value provided by large-scale IoT sensor deployments far outweighs the costs of moving away from legacy technologies and manual processes, which require relying on networks that are ill-fit to the requirements of the devices they support and lack the flexibility to adapt. To that end, the following three examples illustrate how IoT connectivity using LPWAN networks like LoRaWAN is improving public safety, conserving resources, and providing other unprecedented benefits by enabling businesses to do far more than they ever could.

Smart buildings and campuses – improving air quality

Smog, wildfires and other sources of pollution create unhealthy air that impacts health. Recent research by the American Lung Association found that 40% of the country lives in areas with failing grades of particle pollution or ozone. But poor air quality can extend to inside buildings and campuses too. For example, the pandemic taught us the importance of proper ventilation and good indoor air quality.  Sensor monitoring can help in both environments, not only giving states and municipalities an easy way to monitor environmental safety conditions like wildfire smoke or other air pollution, but enabling building owners to monitor indoor air quality.

Indoor air quality (IAQ) monitoring aims to measure and reduce pollutants indoors for the health and comfort of a building’s occupants, to ensure proper ventilation, air processing and filtration. Using sensors to monitor IAQ in smart building and campus environments helps to identify and reduce air pollution, viruses, and contamination that cause occupants discomfort and respiratory issues.

When deployed, IoT sensors provide building managers temperature, humidity, and CO2 level data. In the event a potential danger is detected, managers can execute remote commands and alarms to alert anyone in the building. The sensors also help to gather data to optimize heat or air conditioning usage, giving building owners the added benefit of saving energy costs.

To effectively monitor air quality, IoT devices require network connectivity to share data. To do that, their signals need to be able to pass through building materials without being blocked, never lose power, and periodically send small data packets. LoRaWaN supports this functionality and communication. Once building owners and operators have the data, they can further analyze it to identify where ventilation needs to be improved or where liabilities exist.

Natural Gas – preventing dangerous leaks

Like CO2 and poor air quality, methane and natural gas leaks are common and potentially an even more dangerous hazard. Outside of building environments, leaks can occur in pipelines and other related infrastructure. Methane leaks in urban areas have been reported to be more than two times higher than EPA estimates, which is why many gas utilities are implementing sensing and alerting systems with valve shut-off capabilities to provide more visibility and improve public safety wherever possible.

With sensors spread throughout all their infrastructure, gas utilities can gain complete awareness and control of their gas distribution systems, including automating the secure shutdown of single or multiple valves. In the past, natural gas utilities were unaware of leaks until long after they occurred, at which point most damage was already done.

These automated systems that detect hazards and shut off the flow of gas improve safety and reduce the risk of life-threatening incidents for residential and commercial building owners. Their connectivity needs to always work and communicate across long distances due to the spread-out nature of infrastructure. Additionally, using LoRaWAN to connect these sensors opens the possibility of obtaining additional property management sensor data to prevent things like water leaks, rodents, HVAC malfunctions, and more.

Water Utilities – conserving a resource that is becoming scarce

As we have seen in recent years, droughts are becoming far more common. Municipalities, water utilities, and residents must work together to conserve and distribute water.

Smart water metering in residential and commercial properties allows water utilities to measure trends in water usage wherever it is delivered without manual intervention. IHS Markit forecasts that almost 50 million smart water meters will ship globally in 2023, roughly four times more than in 2017.

Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is not limited to Automatic Meter Reading (AMR), which allows utilities to bill customers directly based on their usage data. The data collected can also help reduce water loss through improved leak detection, streamline billing through enhanced water flow monitoring, and implement new rate structures to incentivize water conservation among customers. Additionally, the two-way communication between utilities and their metering devices can improve infrastructure diagnostics, provide advanced data analytics, and enhance field operations – all while giving tenants more detailed information about water consumption.

Perhaps most beneficial for water utilities, the wireless communication networks deployed by modern AMI systems are ideal for supporting multiple water metering and management applications. Establishing a shared LoRaWAN network infrastructure allows municipalities to support a wide range of commercial and citizen-facing applications beyond just water AMI.

Why LoRaWAN

For large-scale IoT deployments with relatively low data payloads that seldom require low latency — such as water metering and infrastructure monitoring – LoRaWAN has proven to be a cost-effective new technology investment and long-term replacement option for legacy systems. For critical infrastructure and essential enterprise IoT projects, LoRaWAN remains the leading choice given its open standards, propagation characteristics, extended end-device battery life, ease of deployment, and low cost.

Since its inception, LoRaWAN has been designed to connect low-cost, battery-operated sensors over long distances wirelessly. Once established, a LoRaWAN network is designed to support the broader set of resource conservation and sustainability initiatives prioritized at municipal levels across the country and worldwide today. Additionally, LoRaWAN’s open standards mean that end users can deploy ever-growing LoRaWAN-enabled devices on the network, offering more flexibility in deployment and more devices that function with the network compared to proprietary connectivity solutions.

As businesses and municipalities consider how data can be used to optimize their operations and services, they must also consider the networks on which IoT devices and their data depend. With LoRaWAN, organizations across industries can realize the cost, safety and resource conservation benefits of the Internet of Things.
