The Last of Us Part II picks up four years after the end of the first game. Joel and Ellie have settled down in Jackson, Wyoming, with Joel’s brother Tommy. Their relationship is fractious – instead of the happiness they have earned, there is strife borne of Joel’s decision to save Ellie at the end of Part I.

One day on a regular patrol, Joel and Tommy save a stranger from some Infected. The woman, Abby, guides them to an abandoned building to wait out the storm, but it’s an inevitable trap. Abby is now a fearless member of the Washington Liberation Front (WLF, or sometimes Wolves), a militia group from Seattle, but she was once a helpless onlooker as Joel murdered her father, who was a surgeon set to operate on Ellie at the end of Part 1.

What happens to Joel in The Last of Us Part II?

Abby and her companions viciously beat Joel to death, but not before Ellie arrives and is forced to watch. Tommy swears revenge and heads off alone to Seattle. Ellie and her new girlfriend Dina go after him to help. These first couple of hours of gameplay are extremely effective and introduce the game’s main theme – the cyclic nature of violence and how anger and hate just perpetuate endlessly. Anyone who played Part I will probably have a fairly complex relationship with Joel depending on how they feel about his choices at the end, but it will certainly hit hard to watch him get killed.

In a tender moment, Ellie reveals to Dina that she is immune to the virus, and Dina reveals that she is pregnant with her ex’s baby. With impeccable timing, the ex, Jesse, turns up. Ellie and Jesse leave Dina in relative safety in the theatre as the physical effects of her pregnancy begin to make themselves known.

Ellie and Jesse find one of Abby’s companions, who they torture and kill to gain information about where Abby is. A further theme of the game is the idea that ‘hurt people hurt people’ – when you are traumatized, how do you break free of the cycle of trauma? Ellie and Jesse follow the lead to two more of Abby’s gang, Owen and Mel. Mel is pregnant but Ellie only learns this after killing the pair.

At this point, we get a flashback that confirms what we already suspected. Ellie went back to investigate the Firefly hospital from the first game and discovered that the yarn Joel spun was indeed a yarn, and he robbed her of her autonomy and possibly the world of a cure. They have a big falling out and spend over two years almost estranged.

Back in the present, Abby finds where Ellie, Dina, Jesse, and now Tommy are hiding out in the theatre. She shoots Jesse dead in cold blood and Tommy is seriously wounded. Cut to black, and suddenly, we are Abby.

The second half

We start with a flashback underlining the strong relationship Abby had with her father and then land at a point about three days before the showdown in the theatre. We get some relationship-building and scene setting before Abby discovers her ex-boyfriend Owen has gone missing while out hunting Seraphites, a religious cult.

Abby gets herself caught in a snare trap on her search but is freed by Yara and Lev, who were Seraphites but have been shunned due to Lev being a trans man. Abby finds out that Owen has tried to leave the city and its fighting and violence behind to reunite with the Fireflies. It emerges that Yara’s arm was broken so badly in their escape that it will need to be amputated if there’s any hope of survival. During surgery, Lev runs off to try and convince his mother one last time to accept him and break free of the Seraphites. When Abby and Yara eventually find him, he is forced to kill his mother in self-defense. As they are trying to get away, the WLF arrive to wage war on the Seraphites and Yara heroically sacrifices herself so Abby and Lev can escape.

Abby and Lev arrive at Owen and Mel’s hideout to find information but instead, Abby is faced with the dead bodies of one of her closest friends and his pregnant partner. Helpfully for her, Ellie had dropped the map highlighting her hideout, and Abby seeks her revenge.

After a brutal showdown in the theatre where Abby beats Ellie into a paste and threatens to kill Dina, Lev convinces her that it’s not worth it and Abby lets them go with the warning that she better not see them again.

The Last of Us Part II ending

It would be easy to end the game here, but The Last of Us: Part II isn’t interested in easy. After a brief interlude where it seems that Ellie and Dina will get to live happily ever after on a farm, raising Dina’s baby, Tommy arrives with news. He has located Abby and wants Ellie to leave her idyllic new life to pursue his revenge. He leaves in anger when Ellie won’t be convinced. Except, of course, Ellie can’t escape from this cycle and abandons Dina and their child in the night to perpetuate the violent cycle.

The last hour or so of the game introduces a new faction, the Rattlers. These are unambiguous bad guys and Ellie has no qualms about killing her way through scores of them to reach Abby and Lev, who are being held as slaves. Ellie cuts Abby loose. Abby is confused to see Ellie but doesn’t question it, heading straight to free Lev and trying to escape.

Ellie is not satisfied, and the gameplay climax is an incredibly brutal, dirty, emphatic fistfight on the shore of the beach. Abby bites off two of Ellie’s fingers, but Ellie gets the upper hand and tries to drown Abby before a flashback snaps her out of it. She thinks of Joel and the forgiveness she had found for him just before his death. It is fitting that it is Joel who pulls Ellie back from the brink at the end here.

Letting Abby and Lev go, Ellie returns home. But of course, you can never come back from something like this. The farmhouse is empty and Dina and the baby are gone. There is a poignant scene where Ellie tries to play the guitar, her strongest connection to Joel, but finds that with her missing fingers even that has been taken from her. She leaves the farmhouse and walks towards…whatever is next.

The earliest iteration of Mickey Mouse, Steamboat Willie, is now in the public domain, and creative people out there haven’t spared a moment in capitalizing on this fact.

Disney has long been at the forefront of copyright and intellectual property law, pushing to maintain its hold on flagship characters since the 1950s. It couldn’t last forever though, and despite the Copyright Term Extension Act being known colloquially as the Mickey Mouse Protection Act, Steamboat Willie and an early version of Minnie Mouse and Peg Leg Pete are now a free-for-all.

The expiration of copyright protections is designed to allow for creative freedom after an artist has benefited from their original works. Artists and creators are inspired by each other and it is in everyone’s interest for works to end up in the public domain. Disney themselves have benefited from this, with adaptations of many classic fairytales. It’s also vital for archivists to be able to save old media without legal worries.

How have people been using Steamboat Willie?

People all over the world have been making excellent use of Steamboat Willie since 1 Jan. Here are some of the best:

A person with a firestick remote watches Amazon prime Video

Amazon announced recently that its Prime Video streaming service will begin to play ads unless users stump up an extra $2.99 fee per month.

Subscribers will begin to see ads from 29 Jan in America and 5 Feb in Britain. Germany and Canada will also begin to see ads at this time. France, Italy, Spain, Mexico, and Australia will be getting ads later in the year.

This comes on the heels of a year of price hikes for streaming services across the board, with Netflix’s priciest plan hitting the $20 mark, Disney+, Apple TV, Hulu, and others rising prices and introducing ad-supported tiers.

Amazon Prime’s base price increased last year from $119 annually to $139, or from $12.99 monthly to $14.99, a 17% increase. The added $35.88 per year for ad-free viewing takes the total price to $177.88, a 27% increase.

In their announcement, Amazon stated that they aim to have “meaningfully fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers.” However, it is unclear at this time what this means in practice.

The response across the web has been mixed at best, with many people stating that it’s one price increase too far and they intend to cancel their Prime subscriptions.

On Reddit, thousands reacted to the news, and nearly all negatively. The top comment below an article on the announcement on r/news was: “lol the pursuit for higher and higher quarterly profit goals has really f****d s**t up. no more innovating. just charge more and more. squeeze for every dollar.”

Will content purchased through Amazon Prime Video include ads?

A concern for many people has been whether movies and shows they have purchased or rented through the Prime Video platform would be affected. It seems that the only content receiving ads will be Prime Video streaming titles, not products customers have bought or rented. This could always change in the future though.

In addition, sports content such as Thursday Night Football and other live sporting events will still include adverts, even if you have paid for the ad-free tier of Prime. Amazon is reportedly looking to expand its sporting content.

Despite an extremely successful year, Amazon’s hunt for profits and need to appease shareholders and the market continues. After Max, Netflix, and Disney+ paved the way, it was only a matter of time before Amazon joined them.

Steam Awards 2023

Every year, the gaming platform Steam sets up a set of awards with a complex democratized process. Users can nominate games in 11 categories, and then the five most nominated games are voted on again to find the winner. Most years this works pretty well, but things seem to have gotten out of hand this year. While it’s hard to argue that Baldur’s Gate 3 does not deserve its Game of the Year and Best Story-Rich Game awards, some of the others are rather more questionable.

The most egregious example is the Labor of Love category. In the past, it has been won by the likes of Terraria, a game that has been receiving free updates since its release in 2011; or No Man’s Sky, possibly the greatest redemption story in gaming history. This year, the winner was Red Dead Redemption 2, a game that has not been updated since 2020.

Steam’s description for this category and its criteria is: “This game has been out for a while. The team is well past the debut of their creative baby, but being the good parents they are, these devs continue to nurture and support their creation. This game, to this day, is still getting new content after all these years.”

Red Dead Redemption 2 was undoubtedly a masterpiece (deservedly winning four awards in the 2018 Game Awards, narrowly missing the top accolade to God of War), but it was a masterpiece that stayed that way. Even 2019’s Read Dead Online stopped receiving major updates in 2021, with Rockstar pivoting to focus on Grand Theft Auto 6 and the ever-popular Grand Theft Auto Online.

Only slightly less conspicuous is Starfield winning Most Innovative Gameplay. Bethesda’s latest giant open-world RPG, Starfield is currently sitting on a recent review rating of “Mostly Negative” on Steam, and an overall “Mixed” rating. It seems strange that it would win any awards, let alone one for innovation. It has been slammed for being derivative and boring. Even the people who had fun with the game haven’t called it innovative.

So how have these games won these Steam Awards?

Put simply, these games won because people voted for them. There is no oversight here – the games that get nominated and voted for win the awards, whether it makes sense for the category or not. As soon as the process gets to the voting stage, Steam incentivizes voting with digital rewards, even if you’ve never played any of the nominees.

It’s likely then that people saw a game they liked and voted for it, without much thought for how well (or not) it fulfilled the category brief.

Most Innovative is particularly susceptible to this. The games most likely to take risks and use truly innovative gameplay are indie games made by smaller teams. Shadows of Doubt, one of the other nominees for the category, has only 7,113 reviews on Steam – compared to Starfield it’s barely a blip on the radar, and despite having some truly interesting mechanics, was never going to compete with the global recognition of Starfield.

If you want a more accurate representation of the games that did well on Steam this year, their “best of Steam” summary is likely to be more useful. For innovation, look at indie games. And for sensible award results, don’t trust Steam users.

D&D Tyranny of Dragons

It’s a long-standing staple of fantasy games that a dragon sits upon a mountain of gold, obsessed with more and more of the glittering metal. Protecting it at all costs.

Little did those working at fantasy gaming giant Wizards of the Coast (WotC) know that their very own version of Smaug was sitting on a pile of treasure they all helped grow. Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks had amassed a mighty haul in 2023.

Hasbro CEO bonus in a year of job cuts

Cocks took home a reported $9.4m in compensation, three times his Executive Compensation from the $3.7m in 2021. Despite this windfall for the CEO, he still announced 1,100 job cuts at WotC in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

This announcement came as a shock to the employees who helped contribute to record sales and were the pillars propping up the toy giant in 2023. Sales of Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) and Magic the Gathering (MTG) were a boon for the company. Both are under the banner of Wizards of the Coast, owned by Hasbro.

The fantasy gaming community was left outraged and some of those laid off just before the festive period took to social media to vent on the news.

WotC Staff forced to say farewell

WotC’s former Art Manager, Rob Sather said his position was “eliminated”:

Trystan Falcone, a Graphic Designer at WotC said on X of the sad news:

Bree Heiss, Art Director and WotC staple was let go. Her contribution to D&D and Magic The Gathering was massive across seven years. She was integral to the box art for Modern Horizon’s 2 and was also a key figure in the upcoming Book of Many Things.

Pulling the lever

The redundancy figures have now reached close to 2,000 staff after Cocks contacted all staff in a Hasbro statement and 800 jobs were cut in January 2023.

Cocks said, “Given the state of our business, [the layoffs] are a lever we must pull to keep Hasbro healthy.”

Despite these record figures of compensation for Cocks and the CEO of WotC, Cynthia Williams ($6,55m in compensation) did not attempt to rebuff these figures or take a reduced amount to save jobs.

Cocks would swing the metaphorical axe against his old workmates. He said “I know this news is especially difficult during the holiday season. We value each of our team members – they aren’t just employees, they’re friends and colleagues.”

Before being Hasbro CEO, he served as President and Chief Operating Officer of WotC and Digital Gaming and before that, he was President of WotC since 2016, when he joined Hasbro from Microsoft.

Chris Cocks became the CEO of Hasbro succeeding Rich Stoddart. Soddart said in a statement announcing Cocks’s appointment “A storyteller and gamer at heart, Chris innately understands how to create and nurture brands to drive fan and consumer connection across channels. ”

Cuts despite record growth

In a year that saw record growth for the digital gaming department, WOTC also saw sales growth of 20% in the third quarter of 2023 when compared to the same quarter in 2022.

WotC and digital gaming revenue was up 40% compared to the previous year. This was due to the critical success of the highly popular Lord of The Rings series reaching $200 million in sales and the success of Baldur’s Gate 3. WotC took in $120m more in 2023 compared to 2022.

The traditional avenues for Hasbro have not been reaching the expected heights. This is evident due to the economic challenges facing households and a recorded 8% fall in toy sales globally according to data company Circana.

Hasbro sold film and TV department eOne to Lionsgate for $500m in August. The D&D: Honour Amongst Thieves movie failed to break even at the Box Office in March and brought in $208m million globally.

In Hasbro’s October earnings report titled “Games and Digital Drive Strong Adjusted Profit and Margin Growth.”

Cocks said: “Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming delivered a standout performance across strength in MAGIC: THE GATHERING and DUNGEONS & DRAGONS, particularly the blockbuster August release of Baldur’s Gate III.”

‘Almost no one left’

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a generation-defining video game that has seen universal success since its release in August 2023 on PC, September for PlayStation 5 and November on Xbox.

The game is set in the Forgotten Realms of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) and was developed for Hasbro by Larian Studios which won Game Of The Year through Baldur’s Gate as well as Best Community Support, Best RPG, and Best Multiplayer at the 2023 Game Awards.

Sven Vicke, CEO of Larian Studios posted on X about the Hasbro cuts:

Individually the voice actor behind the much-beloved character Astarion, Neil Newborn, took home the Best Performance award.

No D&D video game has achieved this level of global acclaim, let alone an independent studio like Larian working with Wizards of the Coast.

Future of D&D and WOTC

This year will be a landmark year for D&D as it celebrates its 50th anniversary.

It can only be hoped that the award-winning staff find new opportunities to demonstrate their creativity during a busy release schedule at WotC.

They can look back on their time at Hasbro as a success, but the future of the company may be defined by these cuts across 2024. Next year’s annual report will have a high watermark to meet and Chris Cocks will have to trust those that have stayed can produce the same landmark numbers with a reduced headcount.

Hasbro did respond to a request for comment.

An image depicting ecommerce. A pair of hands hold a mobile phone and shopping icons like a dollar sign and a trolley float up from the screen

People in the United Kingdom (UK) who make money from ‘side hustles‘ will be subject to firmer tax regulations this year from the nation’s taxation authority HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC)

The new tax on additional income streams is set to come into effect from January 1st and will require large online platforms like eBay, Airbnb, and Etsy to share seller information with tax authorities. The policy change allows HMRC to more easily detect potential tax evasion from individuals making money through online side jobs and side hustles.

Under the new rules, online platforms must directly report seller data – including tax ID numbers, bank details and total sales – to HMRC by January 2025. This comprehensive reporting only applies to sellers making over £1,000 annually. Those surpassing this threshold are obligated to register as self-employed and file the proper tax paperwork.

In addition to second-hand auctions and home shares, the tax crackdown covers food delivery, freelance work, rental of parking spots or storage space, and more. The information sharing allows HMRC to cross-reference seller activity on UK and international sites to ensure proper tax compliance.

An HMRC spokesperson told the BBC, “These new rules will support our work to help online sellers get their tax right first time. They will also help us detect any deliberate non-compliance, ensuring a level playing field for all taxpayers.”

Do people in the UK have to pay tax on a side hustle?

Whether selling clothing on Vinted, selling old books on eBay or selling handmade bracelets on Etsy – if the person making the sale earns more than £1000 from their side gig in a tax year then they need to pay tax if in the UK.

To do this Brits have to register as self-employed via HMRC and submit a self-assessment tax return.

The Year In Gaming 2023

Sitting down to write this should be exciting. We are about to wave farewell to one of the most successful years in gaming for well over a decade. Unfortunately, 2023 is also the year the gaming industry saw mass layoffs, so it is impossible, in good conscience to celebrate fully as we might have wanted to.

Anyway, as we settle down for the holidays we can’t possibly be short of things to play, even if we don’t like Baldur’s Gate 3. CRPGs aren’t for everybody and it may not have been your own personal game of the year.

Whatever your weapon of choice is as we enter into 2024, the chances are somewhere along the way it’s been affected by layoffs and redundancy rounds. It’s important to get this out of the way before we go slapping the gaming industry on the back for a job well done in 2023.

It’s nigh on impossible to chart how many people have been “let go” (HR terminology there) this year, in some cases, as soon as the work has been done.

The events have been so seismic there is an excellent blog attempting to track them all. It’s failing, but it’s trying. As well as developers, games media has been decimated, with X awash (ironically, seeing it also removed most of its staff this year) with games journalists desperately seeking out work. Games journalists do not tend to earn a lot of money, they do it for the love of playing games, but that does not always fit into the boardroom plans. What is this AI you talk of? It can write articles for free you say? Interesting…

So the upshot of all this is that we are unlikely to see another 2023 in terms of consistent levels of gaming brilliance for some time. The cycle is complete for now.

Some of those excellent devs and writers will move off into different spheres and be lost to the industry. Bosses and CEOs will be smiling and laughing and pocketing bonuses at a job well done, certainly, if you look at the profit margin.

These future holes though are for 2024’s Year in Gaming and beyond. This year, because of so many people’s efforts, we were treated to a very special time on whatever device we chose to play on.

Let’s have a look at some of the more memorable events.

2023 – As it happened

January / February.

Hogwarts Legacy

January 18th was the date Microsoft potentially blew games publishing apart and caused a war in the rift for the entire year when it announced its acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Obviously, that was not the end of the story.

Hogwarts Legacy. Delayed but finally, here, the best game ever to feature the bespectacled boy wizard arrived to a fanfare of both love and hate. Capturing the feel and magic of JK Rowling’s bestsellers, it may not have been the best game of the year, but for many it was.

Its darker side was the boycott of many gamers who no longer felt they could support a Rowling-associated product due to her views on transgender. The politics aside, Hogwarts Legacy went on to become the best-selling game of the year, even getting a Nintendo Switch version towards the back end of 2023.

February also saw the release of the much-delayed Sons of the Forest. After the phenomenal success of The Forest, this sequel had been on many a wishlist. And while it was released unfinished in Early Access, injured sidekick Kelvin became one of gaming’s favorite characters of the year.

March / April

The Great War Western Front

If we had the big hitters in the first two months of the year, the next two were a little more barren.

We did get an Open Beta of Diablo IV which allowed us to see Sanctuary in all its latest version glory, and for a beta, there was a lot to do over the two weekends we got to play.

Big releases were thin on the ground. We got a return to EA Sports golfing classic PGA Tour. One of the best war strategy games in a long time, The Great War Western Front was released and managed to capture a little of the harrowing trench warfare for World War 1.

Right at the end we got a biggie though when Star Wars Jedi Survivor appeared alongside the new gacha behemoth Honkai Star Rail.

May

tears of the kingdom

The month of May was a blur. Tears of the Kingdom dominated. Redfall and Lord of the Rings: Gollum appalled in equal measure, but other games were easy to miss if you were a Nintendo Switch owner hooked on Zelda’s latest exploits.

Age of Wonders 4 arrived as did the underrated Marvel’s Midnight Suns. We even got a new Farming Simulator. Company of Heroes 3 came out after a long hiatus from the second game in the series, which, unfortunately, it didn’t quite live up to.

But it was all about The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. What a game. Probably a masterpiece on many levels. As long as you liked Breath of the Wild. A rare game worth buying hardware for.

June / July

In June we got some big hitters including the PS5 exclusive of Final Fantasy XVI which sold by the bucketload as expected. June the 6th was Diablo IV day, the game finally came out and people flocked back to the grind like they had never been away. After the bad press the mobile-focused Diablo Immortal had got, it felt good to be back.

July was much quieter although platform heroes Ratchet and Clank made a gaming reappearance which was fun.

August

Baldur's Gate 3 is now on Xbox

If May was the month of Zelda, August belonged to Baldur’s Gate 3. The eventual Game of the Year captivated all who played it. For a rare moment, a game captured what it was like to play a table-top D&D game. It was, and remains a stunning gaming achievement deserving of the long-term success it will get.

Sea of Stars also deserves a mention. A great throwback RPG with so many cool moments and a great narrative. Check it out if you missed it.

September / October

Image from Bethesda's Starfield

Ah Starfield, why do we think your star has not risen fully yet? Coming weeks after the exceptional Baldur’s Gate brought Starfield some unfair comparisons. It is not a bad game, repeat it is not a bad game. It is just not an exceptional one. Hype hurt Bethesda with Starfield but we have new content on the way in the new year. Don’t write this off just yet folks.

Mortal Kombat made a welcome return to the fighting arena, laden with DLCs and buyable extra characters. What have they done to you?

By October the bigger titles were lining up for action. Assassin’s Creed: Mirage was first, followed by Forza Motorsport for the Xbox. Lords of the Fallen surprised everyone and captured a lot of Elden Ring’s old player base.

Then in the space of five days, we got Super Mario Wonder – another Switch-seller, Marvel’s Spider-man 2 – a PS5 seller, and Cities: Skylines 2 – a bug-ridden monstrosity at launch, thankfully most of which has now already been sorted, lining it up for a stellar few years at the pinnacle of city builders.

November / December

Warhammer 40k Rogue Trader

November was quieter than you might expect. We did get Persona 5 Tactica and the hugely disappointing Gangs of Sherwood.

December at least provided some new fodder for our holiday breaks. Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader was a really good CRPG that was lapped up by fans. We are definitely going to mention Lego Fortnite for sweeping all those Fortnite players into minifig heaven.

Honorable mentions for December go to the excellent city-building/survival hybrid Against the Storm and Ready or Not, which recaptured all those times playing as a SWAT officer in SWAT 4.

On the downside, Insomniac Games got hacked and had all its files stolen (not leaked!) and dumped on the internet for everybody to poke through. A sour note to end a truly bittersweet 12 months in gaming.

Same time next year?

Xbox Series S

Xbox had some pretty good exclusives in 2023. Forza and even Starfield were huge – even if the latter didn’t quite have the impact Bethesda and Microsoft might have hoped for. We do believe though that Starfield has the potential to get much better going through 2024. It’s not something that we are overly thinking about for this list, but it’s worth bearing in mind it may be worth revisiting in the quieter periods.

But what’s new? What can we expect? Well, you never know if Microsoft is just going to pop out for lunch and acquire another massive publisher, so 2024 may well have some more surprises in store. We can assume it is going to continue to double down on its policy of pumping games into its Game Pass subscription service, continuing to make that unbeatable value for Xbox and PC gamers alike.

In terms of games, let us look at some of the more exciting additions – in no particular order – coming to Xbox Series S and X in 2024.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024

Microsoft Flight Sim 2024

Xbox Game Studios
2024

Believe it or not, people bought Xboxes just to play Microsoft Flight Simulator when it first arrived on the console in 2022. Peripheral makers made console-compatible flight controls and it was a way for more gamers to experience the genre, without needing a beast of a gaming PC to get the best out of it. Fast forward a couple of years and the new, gorgeous-looking next-gen version will soon be with us.

We do fear a bit for how this will actually work if you are packing an Xbox Series S. The quality looks pretty intense, but Microsoft has not yet released a game that will only work on its higher-end console, so we can take a guess that there may well be a slightly hobbled version for the S.

Skull and Bones

Skull and Bones

Ubisoft
16th February

Xbox has already done well with pirate games with the enchanting Sea of Thieves from Rare on the platform for many years now – almost as long as Skull and Bones has been in development in fact.

Skull and Bones however looks as though it will bring a whole new level to pirate games with its huge open seas and the opportunity to lead your band of merry men (or was that Robin Hood, getting our thieves mixed up).

If Ubisoft gets this right there is definitely buried treasure here and hopefully a game we can enjoy for a long, long time.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2

Senua's Saga

Xbox Game Studios
2024

The first game in this series Senua’s Sacrifice blew a lot of people away. It was wonderfully well thought out and with the lead character, Senua, suffering from a severe mental illness in the form of psychosis, could be both harrowing and touching to play.

We have waited a long time for this sequel. If you were to point a finger at the original it might only be to say that it was a little ahead of the technology that was available to it. Now with more grunt behind the Xbox and more capable GPUs in our PCs, we are expecting something special.

If they nail the story and combine it with the graphical power at their disposal, this could be a game that really does well as an Xbox exclusive.

Tekken 8

Tekken 8

Bandai Namco
26th January 2024

It’s been a decent year for fight games. We had the return of the Mortal Kombat franchise, the Excellent DNF Duel, not to mention Street Fighter 6. Tekken 8 should continue that streak into the opening months of 2024. One of the oldest fighters since back in the day of the original PlayStation in the ’90s, it is now on its 8th iteration, and boy does it look good in Unreal Engine 5. Put this one on your list whether you are a tried and tested fight fan or a hopeless button basher.

Star Wars Outlaws

Star Wars Outlaws: release window, trailers, gameplay, more | Digital Trends

Ubisoft/Lucasfilms
2024

Not much is known about the forthcoming open-world Star Wars game, other than it is the first time it has been attempted, and it’s set somewhere in the timeline between The Empire Strikes Back and the Return of the Jedi movies.

Ubisoft obviously has form for creating gorgeous-looking worlds – we have seen that plenty of times with the Assassin’s Creed series, and everybody is hoping they can pull off this Red Dead Redemption in space. We will be keeping a close eye on the progress of this one.

What else can we expect on Xbox in 2024

That is merely a handful of the good stuff we can expect on Xbox next year. We already know that 2024 won’t be as huge a year for gaming as 2023 was, but don’t write it off yet. There are plenty of good things on the horizon for those that wait. Keep abreast of it all as we continue to build our gaming section, here on readwrite.com

Christmas is fast approaching, but that means so is January. For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere it brings more bleak, long, cold nights of winter without the buzz and sparkle of the holiday season to get us through it.

But fear not. It’s also the perfect time to snuggle up on the sofa with loved ones, friends or pets and binge-watch new movies or shows on popular streaming services.

Here are our recommendations of what to watch in January 2024 across Netflix, Disney+ and Apple TV.

New movies or films on Disney+ in January (US)

1. Echo (January 10)

The latest Marvel show will hit screens on January 9 and is sure to be action-packed. Following the end of Hawkeye (2021) in New York City, Maya Lopez is being pursued by crime lord Kingpin’s organization, leading her to return to her hometown in Oklahoma, where she must come to terms with her past, reconnect with her Native American roots, and embrace her family and community.

2. Bluey, season 3, (January 12)

If you’ve never heard of Bluey that’s okay, it’s a kids’ show, but one even parents love. The third season of the animated series which centers on a family of four Australian dogs (Bluey, her little sister Bingo and her parents) will be available to stream on January 12. Bluey may not be as blockbuster as the above Marvel entry but it is more popular. The cartoon has had over 1.4 billion minutes of viewtime by Americans on Disney+ alone. Crickey!

3. Percy Jackson and the Olympians, episodes 4 – 8, (January 3)

The show about a young boy who learns he is the son of an ancient Greek god will release the second half of its premiere season every Wednesday throughout January. Episode four will be available on January 3 and the finale on January 31. There are rumours the production company plans to make five seasons of the series but that will depend on ratings for the first season. So if you’re a fan, go watch it.

4. A Real Bug’s Life (January 24)

Inspired by Pixar’s A Bug’s Life, the new series from National Geographic, A Real Bug’s Life, vows to be “an incredible adventure into nine different micro bug worlds around the globe, where the forces of nature play out on a miniature scale and where tiny creatures rely on amazing powers and extraordinary alliances to make it through each day.” If you like wildlife shows this is one for you. All episodes are available to stream on January 24.

5. Choir (January 31)

“Choir” is a 6-part documentary series following America’s Got Talent finalists Detroit Youth Choir as they prepare for the performance of a lifetime. Filmed alongside the choir and its father-figure leader, it promises to be a motivational and uplifting look at how children from Detroit took their talents to one of the world’s biggest stages.

New movies or films on Apple TV in January (US)

1. Criminal Record (January 12)

Do you like a gritty, procedural crime drama? Then this British series released on January 10 will be right up your street. A veteran detective played by Peter Capaldi (Doctor Who) is paired with rookie Cush Jumbo (The Good Wife) to solve a murder. Familiar sounding plot so far but things get more complex as the case ties to an older one Capaldi’s character believed he had solved years ago. The first two episodes air on Apple TV on January 12 followed by new episodes every Friday until February 23.

2. Masters Of The Air (January 26)

Not one to be missed, this big-budget WW2 drama from Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks follows the eleven-man crew of a Flying Fortress bomber behind enemy lines. Based on the book of the same name by Donald L. Miller this period epic will tell the story of the US Army’s Eighth Air Force who engaged the Luftwaffe and bombed several German cities during the conflict.

New movies or films on Netflix in January (US)

1. The Brothers Sun (January 4)

Netflix and Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh team up for a new black comedy series out on January 4. Bruce Sun’s (Sam Song Li) estranged older brother Charles (Justin Chien) suddenly reappears in LA after years apart and reveals their family runs a notorious Taiwanese triad, with Charles as one of its deadliest enforcers. Their mother Eileen (Yeoh) had fled Taiwan long ago, taking only Bruce with her to escape the triad life while leaving Charles behind. Now reunited, the very different brothers find their relationship tested even as they come to terms with the dark family secrets.

2. Good Grief (January 5)

Dan Levy (Schitt’s Creek) stars and directs Good Grief, a comedy-drama about a man whose life is turned upside down after the sudden death of his husband. After the tragedy, his two best friends take him to Paris to help him come to terms with his grief.

3. Griselda (January 25)

Sofia Vergara executive produces and stars as Griselda Blanco in the limited series Griselda. Inspired by true events, it follows the Colombian businesswoman’s rise to become “the Godmother” of a massively profitable drug cartel. Set amidst the vivid backdrop of 1970s-80s Miami underworld, the tale promises high fashion and higher stakes.

The European Union (EU) has provisionally approved rules to improve protections and benefits for gig economy workers, largely aimed at those who deliver food and offer rides through apps.

Those who work for apps like Deliveroo, Uber, Bolt, and more tend to get missed in terms of workplace protection. The proposed rules would determine who should get similar benefits to full-time employees, as well as restrict the use of algorithms to manage gig workers.

The goal is to increase accountability and transparency for apps that rely on independent contractors, as well as remove gray areas around labor rights. The directive has been worked on for years and was provisionally approved by the EU on Wednesday, December 13.

What do the new rules state?

Although the directive still needs to be ratified by lawmakers and member states, the new rules “ensure platform workers, such as drivers and riders, receive the social and labor rights they are entitled to, without sacrificing the flexibility of the platform business model,” according to Nicolas Schmit, the bloc’s executive commissioner for jobs and social rights, as reported by AP.

Specifically, the rules aim to help clear up the employment status of as many as 5.5 million people, many of whom are currently classed as gig workers but should actually be entitled to employee benefits.

As such, some platforms that meet at least two criteria will be deemed an “employer” and people working for that company will be reclassified as “workers” with the right to a minimum wage, paid vacation, pensions, and unemployment and sickness benefits.

The criteria include factors such as limiting pay electronically through algorithms, supervising work performance, controlling working conditions, or dictating a worker’s appearance and conduct. There will also be more insight into automated monitoring and decision-making systems, to prevent companies from accessing certain types of personal data, such as the emotional or psychological state of workers, or predictions about potential union activity.

After ratification, member states will then have two years to transpose it into their local laws.

Reolution of Wigs

In today’s world, fashion and personal style have become essential aspects of self-expression. People constantly seek new ways to experiment with their appearance and make bold statements. One such trend that has gained immense popularity is the technological revolution of wigs. Wigs have evolved beyond being mere accessories for those suffering from hair loss; they have become a powerful tool for transforming style and self-expression. In this article, we will explore how technology has revolutionized the world of wigs, allowing individuals to embrace their creativity and redefine their looks.

1. Introduction: The Power of Personal Style

In a world that celebrates individuality, personal style has the power to convey our unique identities and aspirations. Fashion enthusiasts continuously explore new avenues to express themselves, and wigs have emerged as a game-changer in this quest. Furthermore, wigs offer the freedom to experiment with different looks without permanently changing one’s natural hair. Hence, the technological advancements in the wig industry have made it possible for individuals to transform their appearance effortlessly and authentically.

2. The Evolution of Wigs: From Necessity to Fashion Statement

Wigs have a long and fascinating history, dating back thousands of years. They were initially used for practical purposes, such as protection against the elements and as a symbol of social status. However, in recent times, wigs have transcended their functional origins and have become a prominent fashion accessory. The advent of technology has revolutionized the way wigs are created and worn, opening up a world of possibilities for individuals seeking to redefine their style.

3. Synthetic Wigs: The Versatile and Accessible Option

Synthetic wigs have gained immense popularity due to their affordability, versatility, and low-maintenance nature. These wigs are made from synthetic fibers that mimic the texture and appearance of natural hair. Technological advancements have made synthetic wigs incredibly realistic, making it difficult to differentiate them from human hair wigs. They are available in a wide range of styles such as knotless braids styles, straight, curly, etc., catering to various preferences and fashion trends.

4. The Technological Revolution of Wigs: The Ultimate in Realism and Customization

For those seeking the utmost realism and customization, human hair wigs offer an unparalleled experience. These wigs are crafted from 100% human hair, providing a natural look and feel. The ability to dye, cut, and style human hair wigs like natural hair allows for endless possibilities. Whether it’s curly, straight, or wavy locks, human hair wigs allow individuals to create their desired aesthetic effortlessly.

5. Lace Front Wigs: The Technological Revolution of Wigs

Lace front wigs have revolutionized the wig industry with their innovative design. These wigs feature a sheer lace panel along the hairline, seamlessly blending with the wearer’s skin. The result is an undetectable hairline that gives the illusion of hair growing naturally from the scalp. Lace front wigs have become a go-to choice for individuals who value a natural and realistic appearance.

6. Heat-Friendly Wigs: The Technological Revolution of Wigs

Technology has introduced heat-friendly wigs that allow users to style their wigs using heat tools such as curling irons and straighteners. These wigs are made from advanced heat-resistant fibers that can withstand high temperatures without damage. Heat-friendly wigs provide the freedom to change hairstyles as desired, empowering individuals to experiment with different looks effortlessly.

7. Smart Wigs: The Integration of Technology and Hairpieces

As technology continues to advance, smart wigs have emerged as cutting-edge innovations. These wigs are equipped with integrated sensors, Bluetooth connectivity, and even built-in voice assistants. Smart wigs can monitor environmental conditions, adjust hair color or style remotely, and offer personalized recommendations based on individual preferences. This seamless integration of technology and hairpieces opens up a new realm of possibilities for wig wearers.

8. Virtual Try-On: Enhancing the Wig Shopping Experience

The rise of virtual try-on technology has transformed the way people shop for wigs. With the help of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), individuals can now visualize how different wigs will look on them before making a purchase. Virtual try-on platforms allow users to upload a photo or use their device’s camera to try on various wig styles such as small knotless braids (fancivivi dotcom /small knotless braids), curly, long hair, etc. This technology has revolutionized the wig shopping experience, making it more convenient and empowering for customers.

9. Maintenance and Care: Keeping Your Wig in Top Shape

Proper maintenance and care are crucial to ensure the longevity and quality of wigs. Cleaning, storing, and styling wigs correctly can significantly extend their lifespan. From using specialized wig shampoos and conditioners to investing in wig stands and brushes, handling wigs is essential to preserve their natural look and feel. Following a regular maintenance routine will keep wigs in top shape and ready to enhance your style at any time.

10. Wig Styling Tips: Unleashing Your Creativity

Wigs offer endless possibilities for creative styling. Whether you want to achieve a sleek and polished look or experiment with vibrant colors and bold textures, wig styling techniques can help you achieve your desired aesthetic. From using heat tools to create curls or waves to utilizing hair accessories and experimenting with different partings, there are countless ways to unleash your creativity and make a statement with your wig.

11. The Technological Revolution of Wigs: The Psychological Impact of Wigs

Wearing a wig can profoundly impact an individual’s self-confidence and self-expression. It allows one to explore different identities, embrace diversity, and challenge societal norms. For individuals experiencing hair loss due to medical conditions or treatments, wigs can be a source of empowerment, allowing them to regain control over their appearance. Wigs can transform not just one’s physical appearance but also one’s emotional well-being.

12. Wig Communities and Influencers: Inspiring Trends and Ideas

The online wig community has flourished recently, creating a space for wig enthusiasts to connect, share ideas, and inspire one another. Wig influencers, bloggers, and YouTubers have played a significant role in shaping trends and providing valuable insights into wig styling, care, and customization. From tutorials to personal stories, these communities have become a valuable resource for individuals looking to dive into the world of wigs and explore their creative potential.

13. The Technological Revolution of Wigs: Anticipating Exciting Innovations

The technological revolution of wigs shows no signs of slowing down. As technology advances, we can anticipate exciting innovations in the wig industry. The future holds limitless possibilities, from advancements in synthetic fibers that enhance realism to the integration of artificial intelligence and augmented reality in wig design and customization. The evolving landscape of wigs promises to redefine personal style and self-expression in ways we have yet to imagine.

14. Conclusion: Embrace the Technological Revolution of Wigs

The technological revolution of wigs has transformed how we perceive and experiment with personal style. That is why wigs are no longer limited to those seeking hair replacement solutions; they have become a powerful tool for self-expression, creativity, and empowerment. Furthermore, with a wide array of options available, from synthetic wigs to human hair wigs and smart wigs, individuals have the freedom to craft their desired looks effortlessly. Embrace the endless possibilities offered by wigs and let your imagination take flight.

In conclusion, the technological revolution of wigs has paved the way for unprecedented creativity, self-expression, and style transformation. From synthetic wigs to human hair wigs, lace front wigs, and smart wigs, a vast range of options cater to individual preferences. Wigs have become more than just fashion accessories. They have become a means of embracing diversity, empowering individuals, and redefining beauty standards. So, why wait? Dive into the world of wigs and unlock a world of endless possibilities.

CBD deals

Forget baking cookies or picking up a gift card at the grocery store. This Christmas, give the fun, smart, and often delicious present of CBD merchandise. The right items come from hemp, as opposed to THC-heavy marijuana. That means they are completely legal in all 50 states. Better yet, Just CBD will help users manage both mental and physical stress. So, if you want to give the perfect gift this holiday season, search for the top CBD products for sale, such as tasty gummies, tinctures, lotions and more.

CBD Gummies

Delicious gummies are the most popular item of all the CBD items on the market. After all, the top CBD Gummies are available in a wide variety of colors and shapes, including rings, worms, cherries, emojis, rainbow ribbons and gummy bears.

The flavors are excellent too. Give a 250mg jar of Blueberry Raspberry Rings to your coworker, but save the giant 3000mg Party Pack for your significant other. You can even hand out CBD vegan gummies and sugar-free CBD Gummies to people following special diets.

Of course, it may take a little trial and error to figure out your favorite flavor of CBD edibles. Within 30 to 60 minutes, the cherished CBD snacks should help you to relax, both physically and emotionally. Keep an eye out for Just CBD Strawberry Banana Gummies, along with limited edition Christmas Trees, Snowmen and Snowflakes.

CBD Oil Tincture

The most beloved gummies may be yummy in the tummy, but some folks prefer a faster-acting delivery device for their cannabidiol. That’s when a pure CBD tincture makes an ideal gift for Christmas. Not unlike the edibles, the tinctures of CBD oil do not possess any chemicals whatsoever. They are also small and convenient, as people on the move can easily toss them into their pockets, as well as their purses.

Meanwhile, CBD hemp oil tincture is rather easy to use. The merchandise comes with a dropper, allowing a person to take a single “drop” of CBD oil at a time. Simply drop it in under your tongue, or stir it into an ordinary drink, like coffee. Best of all, users tend to feel the benefits of CBD oil in as little as 15 minutes and for up to 6 hours at a time. How cool is that?

CBD Topicals

It can be hard to appreciate Christmas morning if you’re suffering from incredibly sore arms or a pulled hamstring. Nobody likes dealing with dry and sensitive skin. That’s why waking up to the gift of powerful CBD cream can be a blessing in a gift-wrapped box.

Keeping it all-natural, the Strawberry Champagne CBD lotion is made of vitamins, coconut oil and aloe to decrease discomfort. CBD Pain Cream comforts sensitive and irritable skin. CBD roll-ons supply an icy sensation, and Ultra Relief CBD Gel efficiently improves blood circulation.

Give a loved one a rub down with smooth CBD Massage Oil. As long as you depend on a high-quality topical CBD, you should have no trouble relaxing. Getting 8 hours of unbroken sleep should come easy, doing wonders for your energy level the next day. Even one’s aging memory and concentration skills tend to improve.

More CBD Goodies

Don’t forget to look at all the other CBD items that are now available. CBD bath bombs soak away stress. CBD vape pens and capsules also make wonderful gift ideas. The same can be said for CBD honey sticks and coconut oil. Individuals even love using CBD isolate while they cook.

To sum it up, there are many fine options for CBD merchandise this holiday season. Thankfully, it couldn’t be any easier for your friends and family to enjoy a fabulous Christmas present from our spectacular CBD store.

boy feeding dog pet necessities

You’re busy, but you’re never too busy to spend some quality time with your pet. And you certainly don’t want buying your pet necessities to get in the way.

Thankfully, we live in an on-demand world where it’s possible to get just about anything delivered right to your door. Whether it’s a mess-free pet grooming kit or a super-deluxe cat tree, anything your pet could want is available with a swipe or click.

Buy Your Pet Necessities Online

If you’re tired of catering to your personal to-do list rather than cuddling with your new kitty or hiking with your four-legged companion, start ordering these pet necessities online. You’ll waste less effort and energy — and have a much happier, healthier furry friend, too.

1. Freshly-made, nutrient-rich food for famished fur babies.

Gone are the days when pet parents picked up any food they could find for their dogs, cats, and other critters. As CNBC reports, pet owners are scrutinizing what they feed their favorite pals. For many, this means budgeting for premium brands made from wholesome, pronounceable ingredients. That way, they can feel confident that their pets are getting the specialized nutrition they need.

Though some groceries and retailers carry physical containers of high-quality food, they may be limited both in options and shelf space. Online alternatives aren’t, and they have the advantage of being deliverable. Plus, some companies offer extras, such as the ability to personalize mealtimes. Nom Nom, an emerging leader in the dog food market, creates customized meal plans based on in-depth questionnaires filled out by pet owners. Nom Nom’s scientifically formulated meals are made in the USA and shipped in small batches according to customers’ desired order frequencies.

Like Nom Nom, Smalls is another winner in the delivered-to-your-door pet food category. Smalls focuses on satisfying finicky felines with its various menu items. Smalls advertises its proprietary blends as made from human-grade proteins and more. It’s the next best thing to whipping up an entree every evening.

2. Litter box and dog waste needs for those less-than-fun chores.

One of the hardest parts of having pets is cleaning up after them. Cats can be particularly notorious for making life difficult by insisting on a pristine place to go to the bathroom. Dogs aren’t much better. Every conscientious dog owner knows how hard it is to keep enough supplies of baggies on hand for the dirty “pick up” job that happens on nearly every walk.

Ordering the right toiletry supplies can’t make the need to use them go away. However, it can lessen your load by allowing you to avoid last-minute trips to pick up litter or doggy waste bags. A business like Kitty Poo Club provides you with the opportunity to join a subscription service. For instance, their basic bundle includes a once-a-month delivery of a disposable litter box, as well as your choice of specialty litter blend. With Kitty Poo Club, you just take a “set it and forget it” approach to one of the least glamorous parts of pet ownership.

Pet necessities like dog waste bags, including ones that are more earth-friendly, are easy to find on both pet-specific sites like Chewy and larger e-commerce marketplaces such as Amazon. Unless you have an Amazon Prime subscription, you’ll probably want to bundle your order to save on shipping costs. Or, you could always buy enough to have on hand for several months. Bulk online purchases are simple to make. Just be sure you have a place to store all the bags. Oh, and if you’re getting a puppy, toss some puppy pads into your online cart.

3. Pet meds to treat furry companions’ chronic and acute conditions.

Humans aren’t the only creatures who need prescription medications. Dogs and cats are frequently prescribed an array of pharmaceutical drugs. This phenomenon may even be on the rise. As noted in The New York Times, when Covid-era lockdowns were lifted, some pets experienced separation anxiety. Their owners — once present all day, every day — were suddenly gone. In many cases, the best answer was a course of antidepressants along with behavioral therapies. (Consider looking into the latest pet tech innovations for some future-forward ways to encourage healthier habits.)

No matter what kind of prescription your pet needs, you might be able to get it at the same pharmacy where you get your own prescriptions. Nevertheless, why make a special visit when you could just have your pooch’s pills dropped off while you’re romping at the park? Online pet pharmacies, including PetMeds, can ensure you stay ahead of your furry friend’s prescriptions so you never run out.

Remember that you’ll need to work with a veterinarian if you’re looking for a true prescription rather than an over-the-counter drug. PetMeds clearly marks on its site which products require substantiation from a veterinarian. Other pet pharmacies should, too. Never order a prescribed drug for your pet from another country just to bypass requiring a veterinarian’s okay. You can’t be sure the quality or product is right for your pet’s needs and condition.

4. Professional pet sitters ready to give lots of attention.

When Motel 6 asked pet parents what they planned to do with their pets while they were on vacation, more than half said their pets were coming along. Not everyone goes to pet-friendly destinations, though. For instance, traveling overseas with a pet can be tricky at best, even if you work with an internationally based pet transportation provider. Consequently, if you can’t take your pet along for a vacay, you’ll want to find a way to keep your pet cozy, comfortable, and stress-free at home.

The easiest answer may be to ask a friend or family member who’s not traveling with you to step in as a pet sitter. If that’s not possible, you can always check out sites that connect pet parents with professional pet sitters of all ages. Rover tops many lists as a premiere place to find people to walk your dog while you’re away or even house-sit so your pet isn’t lonely. Other contenders are Fetch! Pet Care and the cat-centric Meowtel.

With pet-sitting apps, you can conduct everything from potential sitter reviews to digital interviews all from the comfort of your home if you like. Nevertheless, do yourself the favor of requesting to meet your pet sitter unless you’re in an emergency situation. Even an amazing pet sitter with five-star reviews may not be the right match for a feisty feline or suspicious pup. You’ll feel better taking off on your trip knowing that you chose someone your pet accepts as a temporary member of the family.

Instead of frittering away the hours driving to stores to buy pet necessities, let everything come to you. It’ll give you the chance to make more memories with the furballs who make life more fun, interesting, and worthwhile.

Picture this: your laptop becomes your passport, and your office extends from mountain peaks to sandy shores. That’s the magic of the nomadic work lifestyle – where work and adventure join hands!

So, what exactly is nomadic work? It’s the art of blending your job with your desire to explore the world. Over 35 million people have already caught onto this trend, ditching traditional desks for hammocks on faraway beaches. And the benefits? Oh, they’re as vast as the landscapes you’ll discover:

  • Flexibility that hits your life: With nomadic work, you’re the boss of your schedule. No more 9-to-5 shackles; you work when it suits you best.
  • Culture as your coworker: Embracing the nomadic work lifestyle means diving into new cultures headfirst. It’s not just about checking off touristy to-dos – it’s about immersing yourself in local traditions, tasting exotic flavors, and making friends across the globe.

The Role of Coworking Spaces

Imagine having an office that changes as often as your scenery – that’s the charm of coworking spaces for remote workers on the go!

Coworking spaces are like those super-smart friends who always have your back. In the last five years, the number of coworking spaces worldwide has doubled – talk about a trend taking off! So, why have these spaces become the lifelines for digital nomads and remote warriors?

  • Swanky spaces and top-notch tools: From comfy chairs to lightning-fast Wi-Fi, coworking spaces are designed with the modern nomad in mind. Around 84% of remote workers believe that the right workspace boosts their productivity.
  • Cheers to the community: Working solo doesn’t mean working alone. Coworking spaces are buzzing hives of creative minds from various fields. Around 82% of coworkers have reported expanding their professional networks through these spaces.
  • Resources galore: Need a printer? Conference room? A coffee refill? Coworking spaces have your back with all the amenities you need, minus the hassle.

Finding Coworking Spaces Abroad

Alright, adventurers, let’s talk about your secret weapon for working around the globe: finding the perfect coworking space that feels like a home away from home!

First things first, it’s like hunting for treasure – but instead of a map, you’ve got online platforms and directories. Websites like “Nomad List” and “Coworker” are your trusty sidekicks, helping you scout out the coolest spaces before stepping off the plane.

Now, let’s get into the nitty-gritty of picking your new HQ:

  • Location, location, location: Whether you’re a city lover or a beach bum, your workspace should match your vibes. Think about the view from your window and the adventures waiting just outside the door.
  • Amenities that make you smile: A comfy chair? A blazing-fast internet connection? Check and check. Ensure your chosen space has all the goodies you need for a productive day.
  • Budget-friendly bliss: Let’s be real – you want to save your bucks for exploring, not blowing it all on workspace rent. Compare prices and find a spot that fits your budget while offering all the perks you need.
  • Community feels: Coworking isn’t just about the desk; it’s about the vibe. A vibrant community can turn a good experience into an unforgettable one. Imagine brainstorming sessions that feel more like exciting chats with friends. Thanks to the social aspect, around 83% of coworkers feel less lonely.

Benefits of Coworking While Traveling

You know that feeling when you’re at a café, and your Wi-Fi starts playing hide-and-seek, or the barista’s blender becomes your new nemesis? Say goodbye to those struggles because coworking spaces are the jet fuel for your productivity and the passport to some seriously awesome connections.

  • Pro-level productivity: Have you ever noticed how much more you get done in a dedicated workspace? Coworking spaces are like the zen zones of productivity. With fewer distractions and a work-friendly setup, your to-do list doesn’t stand a chance.
  • Network like a ninja: Imagine having a chat by the coffee machine that turns into a groundbreaking collaboration. Coworking spaces are buzzing with people from all walks of life – from app developers to yoga instructors.
  • Idea jam sessions: You know those moments when you’re stuck on a problem, and then someone drops a casual gem of wisdom that unlocks your solution? That’s the magic of coworking. Sharing ideas with folks from diverse backgrounds can spark creativity you never knew you had.

Overcoming Challenges

We get it — not every sunrise comes with perfect Wi-Fi. But fear not because every challenge comes with a secret weapon to conquer it.

  • Dance of the time zones: So, your team’s on one side of the world, and you’re on the other? Time zones can be tricky for dance partners. Technology’s got your back! Scheduling tools and world clocks are like your time-travel companions.
  • Balancing act: When the line between work and play gets blurry, it’s time for the balancing act. Set clear boundaries – it’s like creating your own work-life border. And don’t forget to treat yourself to adventures that recharge your batteries.
  • Banishing burnout: Long work hours on top of jet lag? That’s the perfect recipe for burnout, but we’ve got the antidote. Plan your tasks, and remember: breaks are your besties. Dive into local experiences – they’re like mini-vacations for your mind.

Creating a Productive Work Environment

Let’s talk about turning any corner of the world into your personal office oasis. Yup, it’s time to master the art of creating a mobile work setup that’s as productive as it is cozy.

  • The essentials to pack: Think of your laptop bag as Mary Poppins’ magical carpet bag – it holds everything you need for a workday adventure. Laptop? Check. Chargers? Double-check. Noise-canceling headphones for when the world gets a bit too chatty? Triple-check!
  • Distraction demolition: So, you’re surrounded by new sights, sounds, and people. But deadlines don’t take a vacation! Enter distraction-busting strategies. Create mini-deadlines, and reward yourself with a peek at the local scene after a task’s done. And if FOMO (fear of missing out) strikes, remind yourself that you’re living a double life – worker by day, explorer by… well, whenever you please!
  • Home in every hotel: Here’s the secret sauce: make your workspace feel like home, no matter where you are. Unfurl your favorite scarf as a table runner, set up your lucky mug, and let the ambiance wrap you in focus. Studies show that personalizing your workspace boosts creativity and efficiency.

Cultural Sensitivity and Adaptation

Ready to not just work but thrive in new lands? Let’s discuss understanding local vibes and sliding smoothly into your new coworking crew.

  • Customs 101: Imagine you’re the host at a party – you’d want your guests to feel comfortable, right? Same goes for working in foreign coworking spaces. Brush up on local customs, greetings, and little etiquettes. It’s like adding a dash of respect to your interactions. Around 67% of remote workers believe that cultural awareness boosts teamwork.
  • Community chameleon: Joining a new community is like stepping into a dance – you follow the rhythm but add your own groove. Chat up with locals, ask for tips, and let your genuine curiosity shine. Before you know it, you’re not just a visitor but part of the coworking family.
  • Dress the part: Think of your workspace as a stage, and you’re the star. Dressing in a way that resonates with local norms shows respect and helps you blend right in. Plus, it’s a conversation starter. “Love your scarf!” could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Future of Nomadic Work and Coworking

Hey, trendsetters! Let’s hop into our time-traveling DeLorean and peek into the crystal ball to see where the nomadic work journey is headed. Trust us, it’s a future worth getting excited about!

  • Nomadic work is here to stay: Buckle up because the nomadic work trend isn’t just a phase — it’s a revolution. As more companies embrace remote work and people prioritize experiences over routine, the path ahead is paved with adventures. By 2030, it’s predicted that a whopping 70% of the workforce will work remotely at least five days a month.
  • Tech – the superpower: Cue the superhero theme music because technology is the cape propelling us into this brave new world. Virtual reality meetings, AI-powered collaboration tools, and workspace booking apps that teleport you to your next desk – the future’s tech buffet is abundant. Just imagine having a holographic meeting with colleagues from three different continents.
  • Spaces of tomorrow: Coworking spaces morph into innovation hubs, incubators, and even cultural epicenters. It’s like your regular workspace just took a swig of polyjuice potion and transformed into something even more magical. Retirement Abroad

You’ve worked hard your whole life. And if you’re like many people, you dream of the day you can start your carefree retirement. But to have a carefree retirement, you need careful planning. If you’re currently in that planning stage, it may be worth taking a look at a lifestyle that’s gaining in popularity: comfortable retirement abroad in a foreign country.

Not all countries make equally great retirement destinations. But if you investigate your options, you’ll find a country where you can enjoy financial security while exploring a whole new world.

Choose Your Future: Finding the Right Retirement Destination

The first step in turning retiring abroad into a reality is choosing your destination. But when faced with a (literal) world of opportunity, choosing one country can be challenging.

Don’t just go with whatever country is currently the most popular destination. You’ll need to take your own preferences and priorities into account:

  • Climate: What type of weather do you prefer?
  • Culture: Do your values align with the nation’s culture?
  • Language: Do you know the local language? If not, are you willing to learn it?
  • Healthcare: Does the country’s healthcare system meet your needs?

Once you’ve found a few promising locations, take the time to visit each if you can. There’s no substitute for actually spending time in a country.

Retirement experts also recommend renting a home before purchasing one to ensure you’re comfortable staying in the country year-round.

Top Retirement Destinations Around the World

If you aren’t sure where you want to live after retirement, check out these popular destinations:

Portugal

Portugal is both scenic and affordable — its cost of living is roughly 29% lower than that of the U.S. In recent years, the Portuguese government has also taken steps to attract retirees: Many new residents are eligible for ten years of tax benefits!

Residency requirements are less strict than they used to be, though you will need to submit a valid passport, proof of health insurance, and proof of income. You also will need to pass a criminal background check.

Healthcare in Portugal is accessible, although there is a downside. EU residents get access to free healthcare immediately, but Americans must live in the country for five years and become permanent residents beforehand. However, you can purchase health insurance in Portugal, and it’s significantly less expensive than U.S. health insurance.

Portuguese culture is laid-back, and the country as a whole has a deep appreciation for music and the arts. It’s also a mecca of winemaking. Many of its citizens’ cultural values center around the importance of family.

Costa Rica

Retiring to a tropical paradise is a dream for many, and you can achieve that dream in Costa Rica. However, becoming a permanent resident can be difficult.

There are three different programs you can take advantage of when applying. The Pensionado visa is designed for retirees with at least $1,000 in monthly retirement income. The Rentista visa is an option with less strict income requirements.

And if you have the capital to invest in Costa Rican infrastructure, you can take advantage of the Inversionista program. This residency visa requires you to invest at least $200,000 in a qualifying business.

These paths don’t give you permanent residency status immediately; you must renew your residency every two years. You can apply to be a permanent resident after three renewals in a row (six years total).

If you retire here, you’ll find plenty of activities to keep you busy. You can enjoy visiting pristine beaches, hiking through jungles, and taking traditional Costa Rican cooking classes. Costa Ricans are friendly and welcoming, and the country is a vibrant mixture of Spanish, Indigenous, Jamaican, and even Chinese cultures.

Ireland

Ireland is ideal if you want to retire in a country with breathtaking beauty and a rich cultural heritage. However, it’s more expensive than some popular destinations; living in Ireland costs almost as much as living in the U.S.

Additionally, Ireland has stringent requirements for getting a visa and becoming a resident. To take advantage of its unique program for retirees, you first need to prove that you have a yearly income of at least €50,000 per person. You also need to have an emergency expense fund of roughly $250,000.

Once you get a visa, you must renew it yearly for five years. After that, you can apply for a five-year visa. You can then apply to be a permanent resident after 10 years has passed.

Healthcare in Ireland is relatively affordable, even if you pay out of pocket. You can also access both public and private health insurance.

Irish culture is known for being especially friendly, and you can easily meet locals and expats in the country’s many pubs. Because Ireland is so close to the rest of Europe, it also offers excellent travel opportunities.

Financial Considerations

Make sure you understand how moving to another country can impact your finances. Here are some things to think about:

Taxes Can Be Complicated

No one wants to pay double taxes. But if you’re a U.S. citizen living in another country, the IRS still requires you to file a tax return.

The good news is that most retirees in foreign countries don’t end up paying income taxes (unless it’s on retirement account distributions — more on that below).

Federal taxes aren’t the only thing you need to worry about. Some states will consider you a resident and require you to pay taxes if you retain significant ties to the state, such as if:

  • You have a valid state driver’s license
  • You have a U.S. bank account
  • Your immediate family lives in the state
  • You own a car registered in the state
  • You’re registered to vote
  • You own a house or other property in the state
  • You still have a state mailing address

Taxes in foreign countries can be hard to navigate. These countries also might require you to pay more than you’re comfortable with. If minimizing tax liability is important to you, consider these tax-free retirement destinations:

  • United Arab Emirates
  • Qatar
  • Bahrain
  • The Bahamas
  • Monaco
  • The Cayman Islands
  • Oman

A tax professional will take a look at your finances and help you understand the tax implications of your move.

Currency Exchange

The U.S. dollar usually has more purchasing power in foreign countries. But to avoid surprises before you move, ensure you understand the exchange rate.

Some countries (including El Salvador and Ecuador) use the U.S. dollar. If you’re moving to a country that doesn’t, decide where to exchange your currency. Some locations (like airports) charge hefty fees. Your best bet is to visit your local bank before you travel.

Cost of Healthcare

Chances are good that your current healthcare policy won’t cover you if you move abroad. The U.S. has some of the most expensive healthcare in the world, so medical care is likely to be more affordable wherever you move. However, before moving, look closely at the country’s healthcare programs and determine what type of coverage you will qualify for.

Retirement Income Options

If you live in a foreign country, you can still receive distributions from your retirement plan. Unfortunately, many of those distributions are still subject to taxation:

  • 401(k): All withdrawals are subject to taxation
  • Social Security: Tax guidelines are typically similar to those for U.S. residents, although you won’t be taxed if you live in certain countries
  • Traditional IRA: Withdrawals are taxed like income
  • Roth IRA: All qualified withdrawals are tax-free

Notably, you cannot receive Social Security retirement benefits if you live in a few specific countries. These include the following:

  • North Korea
  • Cuba
  • Belarus
  • Azerbaijan
  • Kazakhstan
  • Moldova
  • Kyrgyzstan
  • Turkmenistan
  • Tajikistan
  • Uzbekistan

The situation around retirement income and relevant taxes is more complex than you might think. Before planning your move, consult with a tax professional who can help you better understand your options and limitations.

Preparing for the Move

Living abroad during retirement can give you a new sense of freedom. But, like all significant steps in life, it takes some degree of planning. Here are some tips to help you get ready for the move:

  • Make a Healthcare Plan: Health insurance benefits vary greatly from country to country — before you move, make sure you have options for accessing and paying for medical care
  • Consider Transportation Options: Try to understand the country’s transportation infrastructure — researching flights to and from the U.S. and deciding whether you need to own a car are two great places to start
  • Gather Documents: Before applying for a visa or moving, make sure documents like your passport, Social Security card, birth certificate, medical and dental records, driver’s license, and marriage certificate are at hand
  • Look Into Banking: See if your bank has a branch in your new country; if it doesn’t, ask how you can make sure you’ll have access to your funds
  • See If You Need Additional Immunizations: You might need another vaccine or two before you travel
  • Consider Pet Transportation: Some countries restrict what types of pets you can have, and they might require animals to quarantine

The logistics of moving to a foreign country can be challenging to navigate. In many cases, it’s worthwhile to consult with an immigration professional to make sure you have everything in order.

Real-Life Experiences

One example of a successful overseas retirement is Christina and Amon Browning, a couple who moved from the San Francisco Bay Area to Portugal to retire early.

Thanks to the high cost of living in the Bay Area, the couple realized that retiring there would be nearly impossible. They tried to earn and save as much as possible, and they could retire in Portugal when Christina was 41 and Amon was 39.

Dave and Marcia Murray are another great example. They could retire in Grecia, Costa Rica, when they were 66 and 69, respectively. Both had lived and worked in Michigan. They opted to take early retirement packages and sell their home to buy land in Grecia. Using those funds, they built both a home and a guest house.

Marcia also noted that she and her husband found another benefit to living overseas: Thanks to the large population of expats in Costa Rica, the couple can socialize more than they ever did in the U.S. Because of Costa Rica’s low cost of living, they have been able to live off of their savings while enjoying a great quality of life.

Is Retiring Abroad Right for You?

Life doesn’t have to be boring after retirement. Retiring abroad opens the door to a wealth of new and exciting experiences — all while enjoying financial security.

two people in card looking at sunset; summer season

For most people, summer rather than the winter holidays, is the most wonderful time of the year. With its warm weather and long sun-drenched days, summer provides the opportunity to relax, enjoy outdoor activities, and plan fun-filled escapes that allow one to fully disconnect from work and everyday stressors. That’s why most people schedule their annual vacations during these always too short but incredibly exciting months.

Unfortunately, the summer season also brings an increased risk of traffic accidents with it. A study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) over a 24-year period revealed that the number of casualties from fatal car crashes increases by 29% in summer compared to figures reported during winter months. More road collisions also translate into a higher number of car accident claims that you can read more about at https://www.accidentclaims.co.uk/personal-injury-compensation/car-accident-claims. This should serve as a warning sign for all the merry holidaymakers and road users who get behind the wheel in the summer season.

Car accident risk factors during the summer

While car accidents can occur any time of the year, and drivers should take the necessary precautions to reduce the likelihood of these events regardless of season, the figures clearly indicate that the risk of getting into a traffic collision increases significantly in the warmer months. This begs the question: What makes car accidents more prevalent in summertime?

Various factors at play can explain this unfortunate phenomenon, as follows:

  • The roads tend to be busier in summer with students out of school and more people traveling to and from their holiday destinations.
  • The warm weather, as lovely as it may be, makes people more prone to experiencing heat-related health issues like dehydration, heat stroke, heat exhaustion, or sunburn, which can affect their ability to drive safely.
  • People are usually more relaxed and carefree during the summer holidays. This means they pay less attention to potential risks and hazards and are more inclined to engage in dangerous behavior such as driving under the influence, speeding, or neglecting traffic regulations.
  • Holidaymakers want to make the most of their vacation time and are eager to get to their destination as soon as possible. This prompts them to drive faster and be more aggressive on the road.
  • Summer is a busy season for everyone, which means driving distractions are a lot more common during this time of the year.

Summer driving tips to stay safe on the road

Being aware of the road risks and hazards out there allows one to prepare properly for summer driving and enjoy accident-free vacations. So, here are a few key aspects to keep in mind before you hit the road this summer season.

Plan your route ahead of time

Don’t let the holiday excitement distract you from practical aspects such as planning your route in advance. When you’re getting ready to drive on unknown roads, it pays off to do a bit of research so you can remove the unknown from the equation.

Things like studying your itinerary, checking out road conditions, and staying up to date with the latest traffic reports allow you to focus on your driving and be less stressed about unforeseen circumstances, thus reducing the likelihood of road accidents.

Avoid driving during peak travel time

While you’re planning your route, you might want to schedule your trip outside of peak travel hours. It’s recommended to start your journey earlier in the morning, usually before 6 am, when fewer cars are on the road, so you can avoid heavy traffic and speeding drivers rushing to and from work. If possible, you should also avoid driving during bank holidays when the roads are more crowded and chaotic.

Never drive while tired

All the summer fun can take a toll on your energy levels. It also makes it more difficult for you to pay attention to your surroundings. It goes without saying that you should never get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol, taking painkillers, or sleep-inducing medication, but it’s just as important to make sure you’re well-rested before you hit the road. Fatigue and driving are never a fortunate combination. So, if you’re feeling tired you should pull over, take a nap, and plan for regular stops to get some shut-eye.

Keep your focus on the road

A million things can distract your attention while you’re behind the wheel. But distractions tend to increase when you’re on holiday. It’s easy to lose focus when constantly checking your GPS and listening to music. Or, you’re admiring the scenery or talking to other passengers in the car. A moment of inattention can result in a terrible car crash. So, you should do your best to block distractions and focus on your driving.

Avoid aggressive driving

It’s always best to be defensive rather than aggressive behind the wheel, and summer holiday travel is no exception. In fact, you have all the more reasons to be extra careful when driving on busy summer roads. Why? You know that the risk of accidents is higher than usual. You should strive to stay calm, keep your emotions in check, and always adhere to traffic regulations.

Prioritise vehicle maintenance

It’s not just your behavior behind the wheel that impacts your safety, but also the condition of your vehicle. Pets may seem like family to the 62% of households that include at least one animal, fish, reptile, or other non-human. However, even the most domesticated and docile pet can’t always safely or comfortably travel as its human companions do.

That doesn’t mean that a beloved senior Schnauzer or a cuddly, house-trained rabbit can’t get around, of course. It just means that pet parents who need special shipping options have to find pet transportation carriers and companies.

If you’re in that situation, this comprehensive overview of some of the most well-respected businesses focused on transporting pets is for you. Even if your pet is a bit on the unusual side, you can make sure you have a way to get your furry, feathered, finned, or scaly friend from one location to another securely.

1. CitizenShipper

As the leading pet transportation platform in the United States, CitizenShipper might well be called the Uber or Lyft of the pet transportation industry. The beauty of CitizenShipper is that it matches people who need pet transport with verified, vetted feedback-rated drivers. Pet owners (or sellers) just sign up to use the service and input basic information when they need pet transportation. Drivers can then bid on the job, allowing customers to choose their best match, based on a variety of factors including cost, experience, reviews, and availability.

To date, CitizenShipper has been the transportation solution for more than 100,000 pets. Along with every agreed-upon transportation, users receive extra benefits like 24/7 access to TeleVet and $1,000 in pet protection. The average distance a pet is transported is over 1,000 miles and it’s a great solution for folks looking to adopt a pet out-of-state, pet owners who want to move homes and have a professional transport their furry friends, and a variety of other use cases.  It’s also a great way to gain true peace of mind about your pet’s traveling experience whether you need to transport your pet across the state or across the nation.

2. Equine Express

In business for 30 years and boasting a 98% satisfaction rating, Equine Express solely concentrates on transporting horses. If you’re a horse owner, you know how critical it is to find the right partner to get your horse from point A to point B. Aside from their size, horses have to be hauled with extreme care and concern. Equine Express delivers because, as they say, they’re horse people in the transportation business — not the other way around.

You can book horse transportation with Equine Express right on the company’s website. Each rig manager is an expert horseman, which is something other equine transporting companies can’t promise. Equine Express offers same-day quotes for its services as long as you contact their team early in the day.

3. Brook Ledge Horse Transportation

Have a horse but need air transportation? Try Brook Ledge Horse Transportation. The company offers ground shipping of horses, especially racehorses and steeds, but its airline services are unique. The business is becoming well-known for its domestic flights. (If you need an international flight for your horse or horses, Brook Ledge Horse Transportation will help you find a suitable carrier.)

You can choose from a regular or a privately chartered flight depending on your needs. A nice touch is that every horse is accompanied by a knowledgeable, compassionate groom. This assures that the horse is attended to at all times. While Brook Ledge Horse Transportation may not be the cheapest way to move your horse, you can be sure that your pet is getting world-class treatment on land and in the skies.

4. Across the Pond Pet

You say you have an exotic animal to transport, such as a giant tortoise or lizard? Explore the services of Across the Pond Pet. This pet transportation service centers its attention around travel for the most exotic creatures you can legally and ethically own. Additionally, the company is well-versed in relocating exotics internationally, not just within the contiguous United States.

Their expertise with exotic animals, reptiles, and other creatures is what makes Across the Pond Pet a winner among exotic pet transportation solutions. Each of their team members has a true passion for pets of all kinds — including those that don’t fall into any category that could be termed “ordinary”. They’re also cautious when dealing with the legalities of transporting pets across state, international, and other boundaries so they (and you) don’t run into preventable snags.

5. World Pet & Animal Transport

Another international favorite for shipping all types of pets from country to country is World Pet & Animal Transport. Located in Italy, it may be the ideal fit if you’re planning to move abroad temporarily or permanently to Europe. For example, let’s say your job offers you a promotion thanks to your high degree of productivity. The job allows you to work in Rome for several years. However, you don’t want to leave your new kitten at home. World Pet & Animal Transport can work with you to figure out the easiest, most efficient way to bring your kitten to your new home.

This organization has another benefit: You’ll learn the rules of the road when taking your pets on the road internationally! There are tons of regulatory concerns to keep in mind. Even if your pet is hardly exotic, you may have to follow some quarantine and other expectations. World Pet & Animal Transport can make that process less arduous and confusing.

6. Airborne Animals LLC

Some birds can live for decades, making them almost lifetime buddies for individuals and families. Airborne Animals LLC concentrates on serving the pet parents of birds and parrots who need shipping assistance. It’s just not fair to your feathered friend to be forced to endure an endless car ride. Instead of ruffling him or her, treat them to transportation courtesy of Airborne Animals LLC and their team members.

Like some of the other pet transportation companies listed here, Airborne Animals LLC offers both foreign and domestic bird shipping. Be sure to contact them well ahead of when you need your transportation. They take time to personalize transportation for their beaked clients and like to have the opportunity to make sure they serve you well.

7. Woof Airlines

You say you need a pet transportation option that could allow your pet to accompany you nearly anywhere in the world? Meet Woof Airlines. As the name suggests, it’s primarily for dogs although cats are welcome, too. This is air-only travel, so you’ll need to do your homework. Unfortunately, some animals like snub-nosed canines, aren’t able to fly. Knowing this ahead of time can save you some headaches and troubles.

Woof Airlines is a terrific choice if you’re a jet-setter or intend to experience the world with your furry friend (and his or her grooming kit!) by your side. You’ll pay premium rates, but you’ll get concierge service. Consequently, it’s an acceptable and understandable tradeoff.

The next time you need pet transportation services, keep these suppliers in mind. They’ll make your life — and your pet’s life — much simpler. They’ll also allow you to keep the affection flowing no matter where you visit or reside.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been heralded as a game-changer with the potential to revolutionize the way we work. Bill Gates and other leaders in the technology industry have highlighted the benefits of AI in the workplace. The co-creator of Microsoft predicts that AI will primarily be used to make people more efficient at their jobs. Researchers at MIT found that using AI tools like ChatGPT increased productivity across the board, including in areas like resume writing, email etiquette, and financial analysis. This research provides evidence that AI tools can be helpful in professional settings.

The potential advantages of AI are clear, but actual applications have not always gone smoothly. Neil Clarke, editor and publisher of the science fiction and fantasy magazine Clarkesworld, saw a rise in submissions generated by artificial intelligence. Unfortunately, Clarke and his team’s workload was doubled rather than increased as a result of the AI-generated content. The sheer volume of AI-generated content can suffocate workers, requiring them to spend more time manually sorting through submissions, highlighting a significant challenge.

What Clarke went through is not unprecedented. Employees in a wide range of fields, from the aviation industry to the healthcare sector, have complained that they are being used as “guinea pigs” in the rush to adopt AI-powered technologies. Because these tools can’t always automate everything, workers are left with some stragglers. Therefore, people have to take on logistics work that machines can’t do. The use of AI has the potential to raise the tempo of work to a level never before seen. Many workers have found their workloads and stress levels increasing as a result of these difficulties.

OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann agrees that AI can enhance some aspects of job quality, but he also points out the costs and risks involved. Workers have reported an increase in the intensity of their work since the introduction of AI, despite the fact that it may increase productivity. Wages for workers who aren’t managers or AI specialists haven’t changed much either, suggesting that while productivity may increase, pay hasn’t. This prompts worries about the potential for wage inequality and the necessity of ensuring that workers reap the benefits of AI’s enhanced efficiency.

One sector that has become emblematic of the benefits and drawbacks of using AI is the media industry. Copywriting, advertising, and editorial work could be done more quickly and effectively with the help of AI tools. However, serious mistakes have already been made. After attempting to use an artificial intelligence tool to write stories, CNET was forced to issue significant corrections. When an AI-written article about Star Wars needed to be updated, it caused internal strife at Gizmodo. Both organizations, however, plan to keep using AI in their newsrooms despite the difficulties that have arisen. This shows an understanding of the potential benefits of AI, along with the acknowledgement that its implementation still needs work.

Workers’ participation in the AI implementation process is essential but often overlooked. According to Ivana Saula, research director of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, the expertise of frontline workers is crucial to the smooth implementation of AI. When asked about the real-world applications of AI, employees have valuable insights that should be shared with their employers. Employers can better foster a collaborative and effective implementation process by actively involving workers and bridging the gap between management and frontline employees.

As the difficulties of implementing AI become clearer, work is being done to create AI tools that can help with the resulting increase in activity. To handle the influx of submissions, Neil Clarke and his team turned to detectors powered by artificial intelligence. Yet, they discovered that, especially for authors whose first language is not English, these tools were not reliable in identifying AI-generated content. Because of this, more progress in AI technology is needed to guarantee proper recognition and management of AI-generated content.

The use of AI in the workplace is just getting started, and despite the difficulties it faces, it has enormous potential. The implementation process must be fine-tuned, with special attention paid to minimizing negative side effects. When adopting AI technologies, businesses must think about how it will affect employee hours, job satisfaction, and compensation. Successful and long-lasting integration is possible, especially when employees are consulted and their knowledge is utilized. As AI develops further, it will become increasingly important to find a happy medium between maximizing productivity and protecting employees’ well-being.

In conclusion, Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to revolutionize the workplace by boosting productivity and efficiency. The truth, however, is more nuanced. Since the advent of AI technologies, many workers have faced difficulties such as increased workloads and quality concerns. While artificial intelligence tools have the potential to simplify processes and boost output quality, their introduction calls for cautious planning and employee buy-in. It is essential that we address these issues and find ways to harness the full potential of AI while ensuring the well-being of workers as we move forward into the future of AI in the workplace.

Child Tax Credit Proposal

Over the past few years, we have seen several lawmakers push for expanding the federal child tax credit, but with little success. Now, House Republicans have introduced a new expanded child tax credit proposal that, among other things, includes applying the credit to fetuses in the womb.

New Expanded Child Tax Credit Proposal: What Makes It Different?

Last week, Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-Iowa) introduced the Providing For Life Act that aims to expand the federal child tax credit, as well as cover parents during pregnancy. This proposal is another sign that expanding support to families is growing popular within the GOP.

“Providing for your child begins the second a woman finds out she is pregnant — from making doctor’s appointments, to stocking up on diapers, and searching for child care,” Hinson told The Post.

If approved, this new expanded child tax credit proposal would raise the credit amount from $2,000 currently to $3,500 for children aged five and under, and $4,500 for those over the age of five.

While expanding the child tax credit is a step in the right direction, it’s important to remember that families facing serious illnesses like cancer need additional support. That’s where the small-cap company Behind the Markets comes in, utilizing AI to create new cancer drugs in record time. With high-profile investors like Bill Gates and Steve Cohen, this company could be a game-changer in the fight against cancer. This paragraph is AI-generated advertising.

Additionally, the proposal offers benefits retroactively post-birth for the time that a child is in the womb. The benefits will be available to households with annual incomes up to $400,000 (up to $200,000 for individuals).

Also, the new proposal makes the adoption tax credit fully refundable. This means that households with no tax liability would get a check from the government. This change would mostly benefit lower-income families who adopt a child.

What Else Is In The Legislation?

Along with expanding the child tax credit, the legislation also calls for enhancing paid parental leave, as well as expanding eligibility for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program to postpartum women.

Additionally, the legislation requires cooperation with child support for SNAP recipients. The legislation also encourages states to create rules requiring fathers to bear half the pregnancy costs.

The proposed legislation also has several ways to curb abortion, including creating a federal clearinghouse of resources by establishing a website – life.gov.

Such a measure would ensure Title X funding is available to pregnancy resource centers. These centers offer aid to women as an alternative to abortion and ensure that pregnant women on college campuses are aware of their rights and have access to non-abortion resources.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) introduced the Senate version of the bill in January. Rubio has long been pushing for expanding the tax credit and sees it as a logical extension of Republicans’ anti-abortion and pro-family agenda.

“This comprehensive legislation will provide real assistance for American parents and children in need. We need policies like these to show America that conservatives are pro-life across the board,” Rubio said in a statement.

It will be interesting to see Democrats’ response to this proposed legislation. Democrats have largely opposed measures to use federal funds for such programs after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade (1973) ruling, which provided federal protection for abortion.
